First start for five months!!!

Here's one for those in the know....

I started my outboard for the first time in five months the other day and took a couple of attempts to get it going but then stated ok but with a big and a fair bit of white smoke? now this could be a couple of things and hope that its nothing serious but i hope it might be a couple of the following:

1. I used old fuel that i had in my garage in the tank since five months ago?
2. the smoke was just old stuff burning off?
3. or i need to buy a new engine!>!>!>

by the way, this wasn't in the water just on the muffs..

i have a 50HP yamaha wakesport outboard 2 stroke with self mixer

any thoughts anyone, preferably positive ones only please, ha : )

RIBase
Probably just fuel and oil in the exhaust igniting. Does it still run now, and does it still do it?

if it's a 2 stroke don't worry at all.

My engine has been standing for almost a year. I was worried in case it may have seized or similar. I removed all 12 plugs and squirted WD40 and a petrol/2 stroke oil mix down the holes. Then I turned the engine over by hand - nice and smooth - no sticking at all.

New plugs in and she fired first time - nice and smoky for a few seconds though!!!

BTW nasher - the plug setting is supposed to be 18ftlbs - not enough to compress the washers so a quick nip up after!!!

Probably slightly flooded it if it took you a couple of goes to start it, so when it did go bang.......

If it's any consolation I manged to fill Largs marina with white smoke last season when starting a wee flooded 2.5Hp aux. I was waiting for the "Securite / fog warning" call on the VHF while it cleared! I suspect the bang would have sounded more like a cough had you been in the water.

Thanks for this, so basically it should be ok if i get it in the water and let her run through. I was a bit concerned that it was the old fuel but that doesn't seem to matter really then?

It didnt actually go bang at all, it did start but took a while and then white smoke came out when it started running but i turned it off as i was worried about the smoke.
