Favorite outboard mechanics Bangor/Caernarfon area

I could really do with having the dodgy 70HP engine fixed as I want it for next weekend and just do not have the time. Can anyone recommend cheap, reliable outboard mechanics in the Bangor/Caernarfon area?

All the best

David

Chris Caton will be along in a minute David....I understand he uses a guy local to Caernarfon that he's very pleased with.

OK, now I need someone in the Bangor Caernarfon area who will touch 30 year old engines and while I am at it a supplier of rocking horse ... It looks like I will be doing it myself!

You'd be better off selling what you've got at the beginning of the season on Ebay and buying a newer motor.
You'll soon exceed the value of a 30 year old motor in labour charges -IF you can find parts at a price that doesn't exceed the value of the motor.

John won't touch it - too old. Quite understandable really. I can see where he is coming from. I can see the argument about ditching it and getting something younger, but I think the engine is basically in good shape and hasn't done much work. I think I'll continue, but try not to spend too much. It is a really simple engine, so can't be that hard to fix...

All the best

David

David, if you can get that engine running properly and its not worn out then it could be very good. Evinrude/Johnson didn't change the design much in 30 odd years because they got it so right in the first place and there are load of them still about. Mine used to do 4 gallons an hour at 3/4 revs on a Ribtec 535, so quite economical. The larger slow turning prop compared to the Merc/Mariner 3cyl 2 stroke means it doesn't ventilate as badly when you scoot over the top of a wave and the prop comes out. The oil injection version was prone to problems but it is easily blanked off and run on 50:1 which is what the RNLI did along with a few other mods to make them inversion proof. this included replacing the flywheel for some reason. Mine came with the original fly wheel back on it in mint condition.

Since its likely to be carbs and electrics how about a motorcycle mechanic? just thinking outside the box.

Pete

I am pretty happy about doing it myself, just very short of time at the moment and my son wanted it working for next weekend for his birthday treat and so was looking for a quick fix. I have the workshop manual and all the tools. The trouble is that I have still got to weld the land rover, fix the washing machine etc etc before I get to play boats.

It is a bit far but Mark at MES marine in Queensferry is spot on regardless of engine age.

ABC marine in Beaumaris may look at it. They're not particularly cheap but if no one else will touch it and you need it doing....

Strange, they service my mates 2002 optimax 150 and also fixed it when it broke.

Guess. If they know you'll pay, they'll do the work.

What do you mean if they know you will pay they will do the work??? Well when I pull up in a £40k rangerover and offer to pay cash up front what more could I do??? last year I brought a brand new engine from MES, and everyone I know with boats ribs and jet skis all use MES for parts or servicing noone has a bad word to say about them.

Agreed. Just don't expect Mark to be in the building before 10:30 though!
