Evinrude Etec 200HP

Hi all,
returning to a RIB in the near future after a couple of years off!
Been looking at a Ribcraft 6.2m that has an Evinrude 200Hp Etec on the back of it.
I have very little outboard motor knowledge but can anyone comment on the pros & cons of this engine?
I’ll be using the boat for diving mainly and really need a “workhorse” engine and I’m concerned that this will be more of a high maintenance thoroughbred stallion?

To start with etec engines made by BRP ceased manufacturing the Outboard range about 2 months ago in the states!

However, I am sure members with these engines will be able to comment much more about support parts etc going forward.

Just something to bear in mind.

Thanks, I had heard that production had ended.

If 2 stroke is the way you want to go, personally I prefer etec over optimax.

RIBase
We’ve got a 2004 Etec 200hp on our Rib, a 6.5m Ballistic. We’ve had the boat and engine for five years and it has never let us down or failed to start first time. It is quiet and doesn’t produce clouds of smoke like some 2 strokes. Service intervals are 300 hours or three years but we change the gear oil annually. We use the boat mostly on long distance runs around the Minch and around the Scottish Hebredes, whale and wildlife spotting. We would normally clock up 600 miles in a fortnight’s trip and we go twice a year. We also use it around Anglesey a lot but on shorter trips. All we can say is that we are highly pleased with the engine. I drive a variety of ribs in my job and spare time with lots of different engines and all engines have their merits but I love the Etec. A friend has a newer G2 and that is also a lovely engine. I wouldn’t worry about Evinrude stopping production, the parts and support will be around for some time. Dealers still have stacks of new ones on the shelves although I wouldn’t be buying one new in ten years time.
