Diesel Outboard - Cox, Oxe

It's been about six years since there was any traffic on here about diesel outboards and then only in passing. Two years ago a chap from Cox announced that production of their outboard was about to start. It didn't really elicit a reply other than about their lack of commercial membership.

The diesel outboards are heavy and expensive to buy but are these the two reasons that they haven't become more popular?

I guess whilst they are allegedly cheaper to run, a leisure user would be unlikely to do sufficient hours to recoup the difference in the purchase price.

If you are predominantly in an area where petrol is not available e.g. west coast of Scotland, they may make more sense.

Has anyone gone through the process of considering diesel outboards?

I have considered them a number of times, but always put off by the cost of purchase and of course availability to start with

It would be interesting to see the cost of ownership side by side with a commercially (duty free) petrol version

i'm more interested in what we will be able to use in the marine world once most cars are electric....pressure will come on both petrol and diesel supples / availability / price. That's only 10 years away.

GuyC; Proteum have sold over 60 OXE into the UK & Ireland marine market now, predominately to commercial users but a few to leisure owners where petrol in inaccessible and they don't want to Jerry can fuel to the boat.
The engines are now becoming increasing poplar with offshore renewable companies servicing wind turbines on the East Coast.
As you correctly say the initial purchase price is higher than a comparative petrol outboard but its all down to operators choice and location and duty cycle.

Should you require any further information please feel free to contact me at Simon.barnett@proteum.co.uk.

You maybe interested to know that we currently have 4 second -hand OXE OB's in stock having recently upgraded our customers to bigger engines.

Regards
Simon
