It didn't seem to do too bad as a backup engine.

That boat though.

Side slip turn and nearly hooked up pitching it over when he turn stopped. Engine pre-ignition kept it going for 10 seconds or so after he switched off!

I suspect I need to run it in a little some how.

I also suspect I need to lay it down so the carb is uppermost when transporting. But it doesn't seem to say much about that in the instructions !. Don't you just love these Chinese instructions
Don’t you take the prop off and the gearbox plate and fill with oil ?

That might be what you do. The instructions are shall we say interesting and they make no mention of that but it sort of makes sense. I will take a look tomorrow

But it is nice to still see rib.net fairly active. I don't like the Facebook "look at me" style social media, I still find the old forums good.

Was catching up with Jon Fuller the other day. He's mid way through building quite a nice beach buggy at the moment, been giving him a bit of a hand on the EFI setup for it.

Is that phantom still his that's sat down on the Itchen?

Many thanks to Jeff.

I suppose this is to be expected but is still Priceless. Having pondered about the gear oil and having read the chinglish instructions (They are terrible by the way) and having read Jefs Post and watched the referenced video. I have now put some gear oil in the lower unit. It was completly empty and was just metal on metal. Luckily my running it dry for about 3 mins in total (although there was a little oil on it) does not seem to have hurt it and I have now put in some Yam Gear Lube oil.

As described all you do is remove the prop. Remove two alen bolts (with the alen key summplied in a little tool kit ). Pry the cover off and fill with gear oil)

Why on earth there is no note about this or indeed sticker or somthing saying to fill with oil I dont know.... But what you might expect. Pics below

That lower case design looks like a rip off of my Yamaha/Mariner 2A/2B I've got.
The 2 bolts, the o-ring seal, even the anode bolt & shape.
And as it happens, while the Yaminer does have drain screws, the last time I filled it, I did it the same way as you just have....

I think you are right as it has oil level marked on the leg in the casting even though you cant see or access it at that point.

They probably just made a mould of the Yamaha one...

Probably copied completely.

A tale for you......

My son was product manager with a tool seller who used chinese factories to make their brand, they now have their own tv channel. Their brand used a wild dog like creature as logo if you get my drift.

MD said they needed a stone cutting saw like the well known major brand beginning with S. So son duly purchased a new one and shipped it to the chinese factory with instructions 'we want one just like this'

Month later email arrives the prototype is ready. Son and MD jet off to China to the factory. They are ushered into a room where the product was under a sheet. The sheet was removed in true ceremony by the proud factory team and there stood in all it's glory an exact copy, even down to the ali casting bearing the well known brand with S as its first letter.
Factory guys couldn't understand why MD and son were rolling about laughing.

After explanations the team announced that in 2 days a new rebranded ali casing would be ready.

Rob this sort of aligns with the comments from my two relatives in very different spheres but both involved with visiting the far east and assessing for purchase products destined for major UK outlets.

The Chinese were happy to make an item from the highest to the lowest quality or anything in between depending on the buyers chosen price point.

At the high quality end you would get a threaded casting with plugs/seals and oil pre-filled.... at the other end of the scale cast the places that should have filler/drain plugs but leave them undrilled/threaded... oh and save the cost of the oil so it's 50/50 that the buyer trashes the gearbox in the first ten mins on the water.

Both answers can be found if you know where to look.

Is the P28 still sat down drivers. Looked a waste of a great boat last time I was done there. (Many years ago)

I thought I would give the Hangkai 4 hp 4 Stroke a bit more of a run in.

It is a little difficult to start from cold but I think I have to learn the nack.

It is actually very quiet especially I now have gear oil in the gearbox.

Once warm it is also very easy to start as can be seen in the second video below.

I am going to give it a little more running in and then give it a go on the water.

I would like to buy the Hangkai 6.5 hp 4 Stroke to try but I cant seem to be able to buy those in the UK

Just checked on ebay. These seem to have gone up by about £100. Very odd in such a short space of time
