Broken pin

While stripping the yam down to change the impellor in the water pump:

A pin/dowel that I presume is hardened steel snapped off. I have been able to remove one half, the other half it just below the surface of the machined ali casting !.

What is the best way to remove it ?, its a blind hole with no access from the other side. Its a small pin perhaps 3 mm diameter.

NO, its one of 2 small pins that locates the pump cover housing onto the gearcase.

The broken bit is in the ali gearcase.

I thought that you could not drill hardened pins ?

It'll be as hard as a goats knee.

Silly question but is it needed? isn't there 4 bolts that keep everything in place?

you can with carbide drills depending on hardness

between a magnet and a file you can at least ascertain whether you can machine it easily and what course of action should be taken

I have the cover off, it is fine. Cover was held on by 2 bolts with 2 pins.

There is nothing sticking out to "test" as its snapped just below the finnished face of the casting.

+1

You're just going to do more damage trying to get the thing out. Forget it.
