Bill Higham scrappage scheme

I have been looking around at engine deals and came across this;

https://www.billhigham.co.uk/product...RoC5H4QAvD_BwE

Has anybody used it? Anything to report?

Thanks

I guess you have to weigh up what you have to PX, its value to sell on Ebay and how that works out to sell old and buy new outright compared to the "scrappage" PX deal.

Personally I'd prefer to buy local if you were to keep the warranty up with dealer servicing for 4+ years.

I have an old but working (or was!) Honda 9.9 4 stroke. A mate of mine was going to have it for nothing but he's not mentioned it again so I was looking at options.

Value wise I wouldn't have a clue but I suspect not much. Good points about local dealers/warranty though.

BTW I've owned the Mariner version of that engine. Totally satisfactory but I soon replaced it with a minter 15hp 2-stroke... same weight... more grunt.

Although I love the smell of 2 stroke from back in the 70's I'm quite happy with sedate cruising these days.

This of course may change!

It's got to work in their favour if its anything to do with Bill Higham.

My thoughts too! probably banking on folk who dont have a clue partxing their old unused engines which are actually quite valuable little gems with a little tinkering. Personally I'd find someone with a bit idea to look it over, many old outboards are worth more than they cost new nowadays

Sent from my SM-G950F using RIB Net mobile app

I've just been looking at the deal;

https://www.billhigham.co.uk/categor...xchange-deals/

I'm not sure about sending them the outboard and then they send the new one. Is it a ploy for them to then say it's not suitable and try and charge you for a brand new one at full price and then it's down to you to get it sent back?

Who knows, I could be wrong but I won't be going down that route.

Yep a bit like my new iPhone last year from Apple. Their own trade-in scheme offered me £100 off for my previous model which was mint and faultless. Sent it off (noted it was to a third party company) and got an email back saying it had a faulty screen so offer reduced to £20.

I refused and had it back.... been working faultlessly for past year as a second phone.

At least the postage was pre-paid both ways but still an annoying ripoff attempt.

I would never send an outboard in such a circumstance.

Its just a trade in price. They've called it "scrappage scheme" to make it sound like its some government backed discount to encourage you to upgrade to cleaner new tech but:

1. Its not free gov money so you should be able to get similar or better discounts elsewhere or by selling yourself. They will either be stripping it for parts or selling on as a running engine.

2. Unlike when the government does run scrappage schemes they old one will not be getting destroyed, so if you thought this was a green move (although an o/board might be struggling to justify that at all), its not.

2nd hand O/B prices have been high during covid and I suspect will remain so this year at least. If he isn't making a distinction between old but running and strip for parts - I'd expect you can do better selling your old one for cash, or perhaps as fenlander says there will be an "oh, no discount for that old heap" once you've already agreed a price!

Yes I'm getting that impression.

I think I will buy the SIB and outboard as a package elsewhere. Thanks.
