Any reason why these are 2 cylinder?

good engines tho.,, remember a 99 engine 15 years ols so there will be things or many things that need doing.. my 2004 needed a fair few things doing. new starter, fuel pump. ram seals.crank sensor. water pump plus housing. all the anodes n shit.. and was stored up for 3 years.. anything that looked remotely not suitable was changed

Wanted..New owner for 2004 yam..current one doesn't look remotely suitable and needs changing......

Bit 'agricultural' compared to the 3 cylinder engines. Simple and older tech, you see quite a few under the enduro badge in africa and asia.

The 55yams came out in 1978, and were received small revisions to 1981 (mostly cosmetic). In 1982 they split. One version became the 50 and the other became the 60. The 60 had a different bore and stroke and the saddle was changed to the new version with the single hydraulic ram. The gearbox was a different ratio and they are rare making them a difficult 2nd hand choice in terms of parts.

In 1983 or 1984 the 3 cylinder models were introduced and the 30, 40, 50 and 60 were withdrawn. The 85 was rebadged as either 80 or 90.

Due to public demand the original models returned around 1990 as the oil injected models were met with a warm reaction by commercial users. They were badged as the origin range. A later facelifted version in the grey colour with revised electrics came out in 1995 ish.

55 Main benefits - no oil injection, cast crankshaft and utterly bulletproof. Cheap and easy to run and look after.

Bad points - lower mid range acceleration and no trim and tilt.

I used to look after 150 of them and they were superb.

The 3 cylinder 50 - Main benefits - Oil injection if you like it. Smoother acceleration throughout the powerband. Digital tachometer, trim and tilt option.

Bad Points - unit construction crank, main bearings cannot be changed easily, difficult to work on at sea in a breakdown due to the way the carbs are removed and the oil bottle placement. Oil injection can fail, destroying the engine.

I have some 55s here and a 50 being restored. I have to say I'm torn between which I like best, but as someone who used to look after these professionally the 55 would shade it due to portability and practicality of service and repair. Which is why the commercial sector had them reintroduced.

The examples I have have seen hardly any hours. If you view one with corridors bolts or a burnt colour on the block and head, avoid these as it is a sign of heavy use or overheating.

The one pictured is 1980. I have a thread going, I think it's called yam 55 fun.

Is it the 1995 one on eBay? That only has the manual ram some mistake for trim and tilt, it's about the same value???

It's a long way to go and find it hasn't got it if you are set on that.

I not sure is the short answer. I have a friend who is looking for two of a similar size, but he will clearly need to see them running, which won't be that soon. I have an idea to keep two and experiment with a twin engine searider 5.4m if I can insure or a 6m if I can find one. The 50hp may find its way on to the Valiant.

Funnily enough there is a fifth, but bit is a real state of undress and the jury is out on that one, it a long way off.

I could sell one soon but as you have found, one that is 100% is like hens teeth to find. I have another deal in mind elsewhere, so I could be tempted into letting one go.

Is you 4m rated to 55 though insurance wise? I've seen them with 60 Mariners on, but they must go like stink!

Just seen the photograph, not the one in Bridlington. Looks like someone has done something hideous to the lid, but may be for anti theft purposes.

That is the newest version so I would think it was worth looking at and some on here may not agree but if it is untouched and just needs a service it's well priced. They don't get much above £1200 immaculate, low hours with control box and prop.

PM me if you want and let me work out if it would be possible for me to look at it for you. It is a very rare find at that price if it checks out.
