2 Stroke 9.8 or 4 stroke 6hp due to weight

Weight being the issue
Keeping it short
Vote

Why does someone else's preference matter to you? You have the pros/cons of each, now you need hands on experience. Search out a motor second hand and buy. You may even make a profit on the resale if you decide it's not the best choice. JUST GO FOR IT!

Yep this has been chewed over so much already. As LimeCC says... it's what you want.

I have a 9.8 2-stroke and a 6hp 4 stroke would be no good to me re its power.

Your constraints may be totally different even to the point a 4hp 4 stroke might suit you.

Tohatsu is the chosen one.

You've obviously no problem buying second hand.

Look around for a clean used 2.5 or 3.5hp Tohatsu/Mercury/Mariner four stroke (18kg) and buy a cheap 6hp carb and alloy propellor for it, combined cost under £50 from EBay on top of the motor price (eg £300). Plentiful supply.

You can do the same if you find a 4 or 5hp four stroke Mercury/Mariner/Tohatsu (26kg) as these can be retrofitted with the very same 6hp carb.

Most of these engines have running niggles due to carbs being gummed up, infrequent use and Ethanol. Set up far too lean from the factory anyway. Fitting a new carb and a Chinese one at that will solve everything and give you a power boost.

No quick or cheap way to get you 9.8hp/26kg as the engines are rarer and four strokes are heavier so the choice is made for you. You already have the boat, get on the water while you can. Keep your eyes peeled until something comes up, you'll not lose money on the old motor. You may decide 6hp does everything you want.

No one ever complains their boat is too fast

A two stroke 15 hp weighs about the same as a 9.8 hp

https://streamable.com/7xn35g

10ft Zodiac Air floor averages about 37 KMH on a 15

Yes but at 40-50kg too heavy compared to 26kg and impossible to find and overpriced, maybe knackered if you do. No choice but to play the long game. Meanwhile Notebook's looking at a boat he can't use, waiting for the 'perfect' engine and the planets to align.

I think it's just confusion at being asked to vote on your life choices without any relevant information and then being given the option of two quite disperate engines.

I guess it depends on brand. There have been various 10hp 2 strokes that were just 15s with less fuelling. The older Yams were 34kg whether 15 or 10.

Conversely, if he modern 4 strokes are all 43kg whether 20 or 15

I could always see the point of offering a 10 due to some significant laws in key markets that prohibited outboards with stickers on the side having a bigger number than 9.999999 but in the UK back then there seemed little point in buying a 10 when you were basically buying a 15 that had been hobbled. A bit like wanting a horse but asking to have a leg removed.

No axe to grind but a little confused why we are still comparing apples and oranges.

I'm really glad you're importing one. Perfect. Wish more people would consider it.

Last question - are there any restrictions on 2 stroke use - waterways - rivers inland etc?

Nothing at all. Some lochs have restrictions on engines in general.
