The Commercial exam

HERE IT IS FOR ANYONE INTERESTED.
EXAM DURATION
1 Candidate 4-5 hours
2 Candidates 5-6 hours
3 Candidates 6-7 hours
No more than 3 candidates can be examined in one session

PRE EXAM REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Seatime Required
  • 2 Years relevant experience including night pilotage (As a guide 30 day's, 2 day's as skipper , 800 miles , 12 night hours )
If you hold a RYA Advanced Powerboat Course Completion Certificate the seatime is reduced to :20 day's , 2 day's as skipper , 400 miles , 12 night hours

ALSO REQUIRED
  • A passport photo
  • A copy of your VHF/SRC DSC Certificate
  • A copy of your valid first aid certificate
if you wish to add a commercial endorsement to your certificate you will also need
  • A copy of your sea survival certificate
  • A completed ML5 medical report
Recommended training prior to the exam
  • RYA Level 2 Powerboat Certificate or equivelant knowledge
  • RYA Intermediate Powerboat Certificate or equivelant knowledge
  • RYA Dayskipper shorebased navigation course completion certificate or equivelant knowledge
  • RYA Advanced Powerboat Course Completion Certificate
THE SYLLABUS FOR THE EXAM IS TAKEN FROM THE ADVANCED COURSE AS FOLLOWS
  1. Preparation for sea
  2. Boat handling
  3. Responsibilites of Skipper
  4. Passage making and pilotage
  5. Meteorology
  6. Rules of the road
  7. Safety

Not exactly been in undated with exam but I have done a few. I think everyone did the adv pb in Dec 04!!!!!!

Hi Tim,

This sounds very like the Coastal Skipper exam, is it the same format for Yachtmaster?

And while I am on, how long does it last before you need refresher training (5yrs)? This is always a good thing, as it is very easy to get into bad habits and an independent assessment often picks these up. Also, if you are doing something well, it is nice for it to be confirmed...

I did my C.skipper just over 5 yrs ago but use very few of the navigation skills, as I only operate in a single area, in estuarine waters. It is all pilotage. I would be very wary of moving into a different area or using some of the skills without some refresher.
