Why didn't he dip behind the tanker?

With all this talk of having races in busy parts of the sea and collision avoidance no-one seems to have asked the question "why didn't the yacht go astern of the tanker?".

He would have been able to see the tanker from what, 5 miles away?

He was flying an asymetric spinnaker - these are easy to gybe and could easily altered to port 100m away from the tanker and passed astern of her.
Instead, he appears to turn to starboard in an attempt to get past in front.

So, I reckon, unless he had gear failure the yacht could have easily avoided the tanker.

Perhaps he thought that he'd lose a place or two if he were to go astern of the tanler.

I think it is about time the sailing race organisers provided "escort" boats.

the port authority already does as does the tanker, in the form of SP patrol boats and escort tugs( at great expense to the tanker).

The escort boats then could be directed to offending boats assist with disqualification from race and law enforcement at a later time for Port authority.

for law enforcement purposes the Escort boats would need to have Voice recording and CCTV system. and be approved by Port authority.

When I worked in Poole Harbour on the Passenger boats, we and other larger vessels were escorted through racing flotillas that were in the main channel, by one of the Ribs that were marshal/safety boats.
Of course costs would be carried by race organiser and Ultimately the race boat!!!

Why would lots of competent sailors want to have huge additional bureaucracy and cost because of a few incompetent ones...

deal with the incompetent ones - don't penalise the ones who obey the colregs...

I have raced many times in the solent in dinghies to 30-40 foot yachts and have no problem spotting a tanker and avoiding it certainly would not wish to pay for additional costs...

...not much of a challenge really was it?.

Probably have an unfair advantage as during my 'early' years at sea i spent quite some years serving aboard Esso's old international fleet (Esso Kawasaki, Hawaii Honolulu and Demetia) and used to pop across the sea-island at Ras Tanura to visit freinds on the old Brittish Ranger.....that and many of the new fleet are frequent customers here at Fawley/BPJ....

In what capacity are you sailing as?

Have a good trip at any rate....

Simon
Yeh the P boats are the replacement for the old R boats, and they are themselves due to be replaced in the next few years. Currently sailing as a Cadet take my OOW Unlimited Orals in the next few months.

This is something good to remember. It is not unusual for much smaller vessel to have similar blind spots. Plenty of the very common dry bulker handymax size ships (189 m/32 m 50 000 +- DWT) have very similar figures. And on top of that they have 4 cranes....so the visibility from the bridge is really not that grate.

You'd think the entire IRCPS just consists of "power gives way to sail" .....

Camera's would be good, could compliment Police, Camera, Action with Tanker, Camera, Action. Although may be hard pushed to run into a second show. Shame the prat on the yacht didn't have his I phone running, he could have picked up £250 from Harry Hill's 'You've been Framed' - would've gone some way to replace the rigging

The vantage point for the ferry captain is completely different compared to the tanker captain. Frankly, the captain (and probably the entire crew on the bridge) can see whether the WAFI even takes milk in their bl**dy tea! Everyone can make a mistake, but if you know a commercial vessel that dwarfs you is about to enter port, then surely you'd change course?

it is interesting to read some of the posts which are attached to the bottem of that article. It mad that some people just think power gives away to sail.

I can't believe he's a naval officer and has the temerity to plead 'not guilty'.

Its the "blue ensign brigade" at its best.

They seem to carry on with the same high and mighty attitude expected on a warship even though they're only messing about "off duty" on a 40ft sail boat.....

Arrogant tozzers...

It's probably escaped your notice, but in this country you are innocent until proven guilty.

Secondly, as a Naval Officer, he is likely to have far more knowledge of the sea and navigation than you will ever have, so perhaps you should wait until the verdict of the court is announced before making these "armchair pundit" comments.

The officer may be found innocent or indeed guilty, but I believe you should not comment again until the court has reached it's verdict.

In this country we have a right to express opinion. I'm with Nos....guilty...just watch the bloody film!!!!

He may have all the knowledge in the world..but in my judgement if he does ...why didn't he use any of it..or even any common sense?

He could of course the innocent until killed by a large tanker line of thinking?
