hetas is a company that provides training, and sells things to installers, that is all. some stove manufacturers decided to jump on the bandwagon and say that their stoves must be installed by a hetas aproved installer, but this has no legal status at all. its also worth noting that the majority of chimneys dont need liners, but suppliers and installers like to say they do (really, i wonder why). this has come from the very person who actually designs the stoves for a very well known brand, so knows his stuff.

I am Gas Safe registered, I'm also Oftec registered.

I looked into Hetas but it would of been a waste of money for the ammount of wood burners I'd install.

The flueing regulations for wood burners are very similar to vapourising wick burners (Aga's/Rayburns etc..). I'd be confident doing my own.

You don't NEED to be Hetas or Oftec to install, I think the problem is with regulating it.

It's YOUR wood and YOUR oil, if you choose to burn it in an unsafe/inefficient way that is YOUR choice. Deaths from carbon monoxide are relatively low compared to gas burning appliances.

However...you try selling your house without the necessary paperwork in force. The buyers solicitor will go to town on you, and it'll prob cost more to put it right than paying someone to do the job properly in the first place.

Not a troll question..... I am genuinely interested in how people view Hetas.

I am similar to wibs, gas and oil registered and 30 yrs in the heating trade, Hetas is a joke in my eyes as in my local area there are a number of hetas approved installers that know F##k All !!.
One was a tv aerial fitter the other was a van driver they do a 2 day course and thats them hetas registered, let loose on the general public to learn as they go, making loads of mistakes.

The only advantage to being in the hetas club is , no need to go through building control to register installs, as you can self certify your jobs.

Before Hetas was the SFA ( solid fuel advisory service) same course as hetas that was supposed to last forever, not every five years to make Hetas loads of money ! and mislead the public.

I have never cleaned my glass other than cooking a fire at high temperatures often. Got our very nice $4,000 wood stove for free from someone doing a remodel that never used it more than a couple of times

By the end of next year my goal is to be heating by radiant floor heating, and actually put insulation back into the house. In the mean time I have a couple of cords of wood ready to go and an oak forest around us, that always needs cleaning for fire danger.

Both myself and a mate have identical wood burners.
Mine was installed by the supplier, he collected his and fitted it himself.
I insisted on a flue liner, he didn't bother.
By fitting it himself, He saved £500 in comparison to me. He's since had to fit a liner due to deposits running down his chimney and dripping past the register plate, leaving a smelly shitty mess.
His fire never worked as well as mine, took longer to light too.
By the end of his "diy" install, he's £100 better off, was it worth it?
He has no paperwork to offer with the house sale, I have it all.
Pay someone to do it right IMO

We had a chippy onsite at the time. Our's is all twinwall 150mm SS. The chippy and the installer had a bit of a time getting it through floors and out of the roof. The roofer is a pal, he sent a couple of lads over to bust through the roof and make good.

I've fitted one in a static caravan since having observed. I needed the HETAS cert to get the place signed off.

Appreciating it rt now, gone chilly. She's just getting up to speed.

Plus, if you do a home install with oil, the insurance company will be on you like a rabid pitbull if there's a spillage due any tiny fault on the tank side and that's SERIOUSLY (telephone numbers) expensive to clean up.

As a point of interest: There is NO legal requirement to be either oftec (oil) or hetas (s/f) approved. only to be competent install to regs in force and register new work with building control !.

Gas is a different matter and a person MUST be registered with gas-safe for the category of work being undertaken and notify new works in the approved manner.

I got all the tickets for my install, as It was a safer bet , incase of house resell .. Have to say .. there are rules about breaking through floors etc, using correct distances to combustibles .. and having got a good heat up in mine with some hardwoods I can see why
