I think the boat was tillered steered and the helm got mixed up - quite why they got into that situation in the 1st place is beyond me though. And what a lovely classic yacht!!!

If i saw a boat that big coming, I think I would be turning long before we got that close

My guess would be chap was down below (making a G&T...?) and left the autopilot "incharge"

have done this myself and missed a chanle marker by ohhh 12' not big and not very clever... 12' the other way and we might have spilt the gin...
