Tick treatment. What are you guys using?

Got a trip over to West Scotland in couple of weeks. Last time in September the dog picked up a couple of ticks and we figure there might still be a chance of some at this time of year. Although at least the grass etc will still be low.

Previously used frontline/spot on treatments but last time we had the dog at vets he gave us Nexgard Afoxolaner tablets instead.

What do you guys find works the best for your dogs?

Sadly we’re dogless at the mo, but when we had our Lab, we used Frontline. I wasn’t happy pumping him full of systemic drugs. He still picked up the odd one or two, but we had a “tick spanner” for mechanically removing them. We still keep the spanner in the camper incase we pick one up on our travels.

Hi Brian, Isla has Simpartica Trio which has been great keeping fleas and especially ticks under control.
When we went to Morvich a couple of years ago the site and surrounding area was rife with ticks. Every day I removed at least 10 dead ticks from her using a tick remover.

I pulled 4 ticks of my dogs tonight. They’ve started early this year. I haven’t treated them yet but it’ll be Bob Martins when I do.

I used to have a Brittany with cotton soft hair. She was a tick magnet. Frontline is what I sometimes used, otherwise I shaved her hair short in the summer. We have deer ticks that carry Lyme disease and other bad diseases. I just had a deer tick embed in me overnight, but it was less than 24 hours so no feeding. Keeping the ticks off the dog keeps the ticks off of you, although I always hated putting chemicals onto my dogs, I feel like not ruining our lives has some value. Here in the USA we are required to over vaccinate our pets too. (I am all for reasonable vaccinations as I read "Gun's, Germ's, and Steel" along with "1493". It's just I have had a small dog that died slowly from over vaccination.)

It is posted under "Other Stuff"!

If you've ever camped and boated with a dog who's got ticks and/or fleas, you'd know how much it can ruin a good boating holiday.

How about using the boat with dogs including pics, makes this a boating thread right?

She put the lifejacket on herself

We tend to not be too bad over on the east for ticks and midgies, but of course both us and the dog do get occasionally regardless of sprays. oils, medication etc.

All of which can have side effects, although rare I suppose.

Thats when we also need to deploy the tic spanners.

But I do feel the west coast is worse, with some of the islands really bad.

Bad news they might be out in force already, but at least my dog has quite a thin single coat unlike my brothers 4 particularly hairy long haired German shepherds that were a total nightmare to check.

Hopefully we will miss the midge.....although taking a couple of head nets...just in case.

Ticks on Dogs !!

Every year our dogs pick up Ticks. Gentle grooming and hand petting usually feel the Tick and they can be removed with small plastic tick remover. I tried some anti tick medicine before, but felt that did the dog more harm than any actual ticks. The main problem as far as I am concerned is if you don't find any tick and they eventually just fall off they make a hell of a mess of the carpet when you stand on them !! Never had any health problems with the ticks on my dogs. Staying in Argyll Scotland there are plenty about. Advice would be forget about anti tick treatment.

We use one of these:
https://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/p...ollar-for-dogs

Our vet suggested it as our Toby can react quite badly to medicines.
He was noticeably off colour for a few days after applying frontline.

The Collar doesn't effect him at all, and he's not had a Tick whilst wearing one.

We put it on @March/April and leave it on until Autumn.
