Tax code blunders

I have been reading articles recently about tax coding blunders for PAYE coding notices for this coming tax year. Most papers have an article.

Having read one article I checked my papers which arrived yesterday, 4 codings sent to me were all incorrect despite my accountant completing submissions. A follow up to the tax office with accountant today has confirmed that ALL my given PAYE codings were wrong and I would have paid too much in next finance tax year. So despite using an accountant the Tax office still got codings wrong against the correct submissions.

Apparently the tax office are re-coding me so will wait for these notices. As a word of advice to everyone, check your codings and check against examples in recent news articles as it is clear the Tax office has really fouled it up and this is the day after I discovered that fuel duty tax returns I submitted had been lost from submissions in January.

my girlfriend said, they buggered all the ones who have two incomes up, your accountant should have known about it a long time back, give him a kick up the arse
she said get it sorted or you'll be paying about £100 a month too much
deep joy, living with an accountant

Apparently the nice people at the Inland Revenue are using a new system which threw out the wrong codes.

It's not just the inland revenue who can muck it up.

Years ago whilst I was being paid a standard monthy wage with no overtime, bonuses, etc, the company I worked for cocked up my Tax payments and I went 2 years paying too little tax each month.
The Tax office caught up with it and I was landed with a £2000 bill.

The Tax office said I should have calculated my tax contribution myself each month to check I was paying the correct amount.

Yeah right, who does that?

My employer said exactly the same thing, and it appears that(at that time, don't know about now) it's the employees responsibility to check they are paying the correct amount of tax each month not your employer.

Luckily I had the ear of some decent people at head office who arranged a bonus for me that year to pay it off, however the local accountant never really did forgive me for going above his head, and my expenses were always queried or delayed after that.

Nasher.

I hope they have sorted yours out, With the stroke of a pen after a telephone call my tax liability has been halved to standard rate 20%, so worth checking, what a cock up by tax offices
