Southampton Boat Show 2020

Obviously I'm assuming SBS won't take place this year, but the organisers aren't exactly making an effort to keep us up to date:

The latest update on the website above isn't actually dated, but as it says the show is 6 months away it can't have been updated since March.

Which is a bit rubbish really.

I speak to many exhibitors who clearly feel that they won't be there this year even if they decide to hold it

I'm guessing not cancelling is just a device to hold on to those deposits a little longer????

Strange that they say postponed and not cancelled. Maybe a deposit or insurance thing.

Guess they will have to postpone the 2021 show as well now, or cancel it, as it will be at the same time

Hopefully they will have one and it doesn't suffer the same fate as some other shows.

Flybe used to do a similar thing with flights although in hindsight it didn't do them much good.

Hmmm, I remember. I had two business related flights that they did that with and vowed never to fly with them again. Obviously not alone on that.

So it appears the show is back on, albeit much smaller and with some limitations on flexibility with regards to buying tickets and entrance: https://www.southamptonboatshow.com/

I've purchased a ticket for 10am entry on Thursday the 17th.
I'm not expecting too much for my specific interests to be honest, it looks like it will be mainly new boat sales, but it will be nice to have a look around.

Actually, that's not entirely true. Pip Hare had her yacht there last time and was letting people have a look round. That was very interesting.

I cannot begin to imagine spending 80 days, solo, on board one of those. There is no bed, no bog, don't even remember seeing a cooker on board.

I spent a couple of days on Pindar, I think an 'Open 60'.

Had a bed, on some sails, and there was a loo, basically a portaloo behind a curtain.
The cooker was a two burner camping jobbie.
I can't imagine how a full crew survived with just those for long.

What struck me more was the lack of internal fittings and trim, just the bare inside of the carbon hull.
I was glad it was summer and sunny.

Cancelled late last night after everything has been set up and is ready to go.

I've had an email from the show, all they are offering by way of a refund is a credit against the purchase of a ticket for the 2021 show.
And are not even supplying it until tickets are on sale for the show.

"We would like to offer all BOATS2020 ticket holders a credit against their ticket purchase* for Southampton International Boat Show 2021. As soon as tickets for this event are on-sale, we will get in touch with you via e-mail providing a redemption code so that you can easily apply the credit against the purchase of a ticket."

Got to say - in the current covid climate, holidays, shows, events, travel etc - always going to be a punt whether or not your plans are scuppered at the last minute or you end up flying back from wherever with a suntan and a 14 day second holiday/quarantine in your lounge..................

Agreed. We purposely stayed in UK this year. Given that air travel was how it spread so rapidly round the globe, we also decided it's best not to be a "statistic".

I was surprised when the commercial operator network was buzzing with talk of it being back on, seemed daft TBF.

They also didn't do a huge job of telling people as far as I can tell.

Very poor from the council, you can argue for or against whether it should have gone ahead by the timing of the cancellation was dreadful. Am aware of one food contractor who delayed paying their £6500 electricity bill until 16:30 on Thursday and also got out £2500.00 worth of food to defrost at that time, only to be told two hours later it was not going ahead. The big boat manufacturers have moved most of their boats to the Hamble where they are entertaining clients on the boats so they will ok.

I'm not sure I would put all the blame on the council without knowing the details of the conversations behinds the scenes. From things I've been involved in - my guess is they've been saying "we really hope this can go ahead, but it will depend on both the country's 'covid status' and what you are doing to prepare/control risk" for weeks, and either saying we won't confirm until very close to the time - its at your own risk to proceed with planning; or possibly the organiser has not been providing everything needed. It would be fairly crazy to be going back to "6 people meeting" and permitting 20,000 people to attend an event (albeit spread over many days). I'm surprised the vendors actually bothered to book - if you've got people serious enough to book appointments to view your boats, why not do it free of charge at a mutually convenient and lower risk time? I think its only out of habit that they wanted to be seen to be there. In my working life tradeshows have been cancelled and the world has continued, because the internet makes tradeshows over priced marketing BS.
