I think it's a piston exiting the engine. It hits his arm.

It's not a piston-wrong shape.It looks like part of the water jacket or rocker cover.
Definitely part of the engine though-the explosion comes from the front underneath the tank.

A guy at work suggested it could be a switch for nitrous oxide... and it exploded when he pressed it?
