I've been reading 'The Story of English in 100 Words' for the last few days, and that one reminds me of one of its chapters. Apparently: 'if you find yourself walking down a Grope Street or a Grape Street, it may well once have been a prostitution thoroughfare'. It might previously have been called 'Gropec*** Lane'; I wonder if 'Fanny Hands Lane' is similar (or was it named after a Frances Hands?).

They're all gone now, but there's even an e-petition to reinstate them.
