I don't think so. It (if you'll excuse the terminology) sits between your email account and the internet, so anything dodgy is generally held for inspection/deletion BEFORE you download it. As such, it wouldn't have stopped the hacking of your account with BT.
However, if you change your email arrangements, it is an excellent gatekeeper - I might get only one spam message a month, and that's on a commercial email address that I've used daily for over 15 years...
