HMS Bounty in distress

Just a update for any of you that know the tall ship HMS Bounty. Her crew have been forced to abandon her in the storm that is hitting America at the moment. All her crew are safe and in a lifeboat awaiting collection by the US Coastguard.

This is the vessel that was used in the filming of "mutiny on the bounty". Hopefully the vessel will make it through the storm and can be salvaged as I personally have many fond memories of my time spent on board as the liaison officer during two of her visits to the UK.

My firsts thoughts are WTF is it doing there? The storm has had warnings for days. What is the reason that it hasn't sailed in the opposite direction, in to port or at rights angles to the storms path?

I know the storm is 500 odd mile wide, but with 5 days to sail in the opposite direction, at max it only has to sail 250miles and that's an absolute maximum.

A shame to ruin such a beautiful ship. Though obviously the priority is the crew.

guys, if US stock exchanges are closed, that means less work for me and more time on Ribnet

3 believed to have been washed overboard when trying to get into liferafts. one of them managed to get to the liferaft.

The skipper is believed to be one of the two missing still.

the question still remains, why were they out there given the forecast. i read somewhere the skipper had said (before going to sea) that the safest place for them was out at sea..... if indeed he is one of the missing two, those words have come back to bite him in full!

The vessel was trying to skirt around the edge of the storm andwas experiencing 40mph winds and 18ft seas when it lost its one of its generators. This caused some of its pumps to fail and it started taking on more water than the remaining pumps could handle. The main engine was lost a short while later and the Captain Robin Walbridge gave the order to abandon ship, a decision I know he would not have taken lighty. Of the 16 crew on board, 14 have been picked up by the USCG and two are still missing. One of the missing is Robin.

While serving as the liasion officer for her I had the privilege to become friends with him, and I can honestly say that he was one of the nicest men I have ever met. My thoughts are with his wife and family and also with the family of the other missing crewmember.

Am over in New York and Sandy is a big one and took a sudden and unexpected turn to the left and made land fall about 150 miles South of the prediction.
This may have had an impact on this sad event.
There is no way I would have wanted to be at sea in this, but then I had a choice

Unless H was assuming that they were all on lifeboats and the ship would survive. As was hoped. Also posts run up on you sometimes.

2 crew were still missing last I heard...
Winds were 40kn
Seas 18ft at the time of her loss.
