Fishing trips (on actual fishing boats)

Today, I am supposed to be at Whitby going out this afternoon on a fishing boat with my 13 year old. But they cancelled, said it was easterlies and they don't like that, plus "nobody's catching anything at the moment anyway". So that was the high point of our Easter break torpedoed.

Only £30 a head to book. Weather report today Whitby beach says indeed easterlies, but gusting less than 20mph, low wave height and long interval of like 9 seconds. I do recall Pikey Dave or chipko or someone saying something about easterlies from the North Sea is bad.

So I dunno. I don't mean to be cynical about something I know nothing about (hence thread), but I wonder if they just didn't have anyone else book and didn't want to go out for £60 revenue.

Anyone got any thoughts and experiences doing this? I booked it 'cos bloke at work used this boat last year with his mates and my total beginner fishing off Pwlheli last year in my SIB was... less than stellar . So I was doing this to see what I could learn as well as just for fun with my lad.

I guess it's 50-50 if they were looking out for your interests or couldn't be bothered as they had some better option. Having said that if we arrived at our sibbing launch point with the gusts under 20mph we'd still launch.

The Whitby wx today shows light sea conditions and a Westerly offshore breeze. They're palming you off about the conditions but probably telling the truth about the fish.

Indeed it does! I had checked Ventusky and YR, where the direction is currently showing from the west - exactly the opposite to the Met. Interestingly, Windfinder (see attached) shows a very confused wind.

Whitby entrance is a tricky one, you head kinda north parralel along the shore before you can turn east into the weather the shore is shallow & it will hump up in an easterly, a small cabin boat got swamped coming out not that long ago with fatal results iirc. Skipper is looking after you and himself

Yes that's probably the one, although it does say the weather was horrendous at the time of that accident it doesnt take away the fact whitby can be a tricky entrance in certain weather conditions & local knowledge shouldnt be ignored
Had they listened to advice that day they would still be alive now
