Eastbourne Pier...

Just got back from a superb day on the SIB between Pett Level and into Rye Harbour to see this on the news:

BBC News - Fire rips through Eastbourne Pier

Bad enough to lose Hastings Pier a few years ago (deliberate act) but this today is terribly sad, we go along this coastline all the time but these piers are so vulnerable with the wind here giving no chance of saving it.

OMG! Bad news
I took a boat from Eastbourne last Year (a 45 ft ish Trader thinghie, to Ipswich for some Folks) to Ipswich
Eastbourne Marina was Ace and the Pier was Ace
Today, early morning I was with some Structurual Engineers (Marine Types) on the Pier in Bangor, vetting the end to see if it it is feasable to mend the end bit and put a Pontoon on it
For the benefit of all
Anyway
Sad news about Eastbourne Pier

Out in the sailing club rib, racing then cancelled because of the smoke.
Very sad to lose the pier, though only the shore end appears damaged.
If the strong wind had been in a different direction the lot would have gone!
