That's a complete misrepresentation of the fact. You can insure yourself if you have about £3million or so in cash. It's common practise for large companies.

Actually all you need is £15,000 - I was shocked it was so little - it wouldn't be difficult to cause a lot more damage than that!!!

Are you sure? I think you are about 15 years out of date and will find that the security required is actually at least £500,000. Best to make sure your facts are correct before tolling out advice on the law.

I would hardly say I was giving "advice" on the law - it was something I came across a while ago and was stunned by how small an amount it was. From £15,000 to £500,000 is quite a jump!!!

OK - how about "spouting shite about something you obviously know very little about" then?

Of course you immediately KNEW that it was £500,000 - for once I did NOT check Google - maybe I should - I was NOT spouting shit as you so eloquently put it - I just didn't realise the amount had been increased. Even I can't keep pace with the 12,000 new pieces of legislation brought in by our beloved leader!!!

No I looked up the exact value. But I never said "I wonder how many people realise that you can quite legally drive in the UK with no insurance???" which seems to imply you had some knowledge that the "rest of us" didn't.

And you will find that this legislation change dates back to the ammendment of the Road Traffic Act in 1991 or 1992 - so has nothing to do with your nemesis.

And you were spouting shit. You either have to have insurance or put up a significant security which is in effect just another form of insurance. And as usual you have drifted completely off topic - for poor questioner who actually wanted to know the potential impact of putting a 7.5 HP engine on a transom rate for a 5.

Wtf??

What's with all the rage lately? I know it's a little chilly to get the boats out but lets not try to rip each other to shreds.. Find a good woman to keep ya serviced would ya..

And if your not going to insure your sib, put the engine on it and go.. You'll figure it out in short order if you (&$)*(#ed up..

If you don't want people to argue with you there are two generally useful bits of advice to stick to: 1). Stick to the topic of the thread. 2). Get your facts right.

Oh grow up! And whilst you're at it, stop talking shite. Accept that if you post misleading and incorrect information, someone will pull you up. And with the volume of poor quality information you post, you will get pulled up a lot. It's not personal attacks, it simply putting the record straight.

I notice you've used that cowardly little trick of posting a personal insult (and in this case a a great example of a "personal attack"!) then swiftly editing before the edit feature annotates the post. For the benefit of others, here's the original text form your post (from my email alert):

Terribly sorry you miserable git........

If you're not prepared to stand by your words, don't post them in the first place.

Just didn't want to sink to your level.....

Of course I am not even allowed to change my mind on what I say now am I?

hahahahaha

I just read this thread right through, and it started off such a serious topic!

So annoying when all you want is one piece of information and things digress onto other subjects and end up in arguments! (adds a bit of life to forums though I suppose) lol

Personally I think as long as you're not insured anyway, whatever damage you do with a slightly over-rated engine you would face the same problems uninsured with the 'right sized' engine for the boat. so stick the bigger one on as long as you're sensible with it! - remember it all comes down to the person on the throttle that is in control at the end of the day!
