BBC Radio 2 - Powerboat bashing

Anyone hear BBC Radio 2 this afternoon? They had a phone in about 'speed boats' in relation to the sad incident this weekend in Dumfries.

Highly disappointing that they seemed to concentrate on the negatives of the sport, and then got onto the kill cord incident with Rib Millie - and a lot of generalisation and speculation.

I was tempted to call in and express the joy of the trip this weekend Round Bardsey - close to 30 high powered 'speed boats' and many different levels of skill - and only a few minor issues.

Its "click bait" for the radio. If you want rational or sensible discussion you are on the wrong channel - especially at prime time. The objective is to get lots of listeners not to inform.

I understand it actually was a speedboat - a Fletcher? Speedboats seem to be in the press ATM: Lough Neagh rescue: Couple found clinging to boat - BBC News

The first weeks of sun usually claims a few casualties, be they boaters, swimmers, hikers, bikers, etc - same every year.

So true. But sometimes it's limited options.

I'm not interested in stories, I do however read the reports by experts when available.

As for radio, I've been tuning into Johnny Vaughan on Radio X in the afternoon. Now that bloke takes the p155 out of the papers and stories etc. He has a light hearted approach to things which is refreshing.

Thank goodness for dab radio .thumbs:

I am the same Whisper - I read most MAIB publications to ensure I don't make the same mistakes as others - that's the whole point of them, education not blame.

The issue is BBC R2 has more of an audience that have no idea about boating, and because of this have influenced views than the MAIB.

I guess you can listen to it through the internet:

http://www.radiox.co.uk/

Or if you have a dab radio you can scroll through until you see radio X

Chris Moiles or whatever his name is does the breakfast show, I don't like him but Jonny is a legend.

We're working in Polzeath at the moment which is just around the corner from Rock where the Rib Millie incident took place. We were listening to the Vine prog over a cup of tea. Moments later this went off Man, 80, hurt as car plunges over cliff in Cornwall - BBC News at the end of the road.

"Sgt Bruce Crawford, of Police Scotland's Portree community policing team, said: "I wish to thank the Skye and Kintail mountain rescue teams for their assistance during this busy period and also the crew of Rescue 948 who have found themselves on Skye so often.
"The hills in the area are particularly busy at the moment thanks to the current good weather.
"Unfortunately we have seen examples this weekend of walkers being woefully under-prepared for the walks that they are undertaking, including people being on the hills without maps, torches or basic survival gear. "

Interesting reading today regarding 1 of the guys who was on that boat, he was meant to stand trial later this year for killing 2 people in a car crash ....
