Anyone know about RIBing in Orkney?

We're due up there (without the RIB) next week but it's always good to look round.

Last time was to dive the WW1 wrecks

Anyone got any ideas of places to visit?

If you are talking about non boating attractions, then there are loads of things to see. On wartime theme, the battery at Stromness which overlooks the western entrance to scapa flow is worth a look. It’s locked up, but there is a guide to show people round. You might need to do some homework on that- it is a local history group, from memory. The Italian chapel, across the Churchill barriers, built by prisoners of war ( Eastern end of Scapa flow), is interesting too.
On the ancient history theme, the Ring of Brodgar ( thought to predate Stonehenge, )and Scara Brae, on north west coast of mainland Orkney, I found good.
I’ve been twice, and would go again.

For the Ness battery at Stromness, try nessbattery.co.uk.
It is located south of Stromness town. Access is via a narrow road, past the golf course!
The Italian chapel is on Lamb Holm, the first of the small islands across the Churchill barriers. If you’ve dived the Ww1 wrecks, you will have a greater knowledge of this than me.
Skara Brae, the prehistoric settlement is one of the best such sites I’ve seen.
South of the Ring of Brodgar( a mile or so) , is Stenness, with a long running archeological dig, alongside the road. Across the causeway from there are the standing stones of Stenness.
Plenty of wildlife to see. We saw numerous hares.
Kirkwall is worth wandering around, with St.Magnus cathedral in the centre of town .
I reckon I’ve only scratched the surface. There are museums, R.S.P.B reserves, and I’ve never had chance to visit the other islands.
You may have guessed that I really like the place!
Hope you find something to interest you.

I seem to remember they did a great IPA!

We’ll be sure to check it out.

I think, when I dived there, someone said the steel off some of the wrecks was used for for high precision devices (medical and space) as it was pre-atomic bomb and radiation levels (I.e zero) Whereas any modern mined ores, recycled metals or just exposed to the atmosphere have that background amount.

Dunno how true that is.
