Tall Ships Race - Falmouth - 19th August

The Falmouth Tall Ships race start will be Thursday 19th August. The Tall Ships fleet will race from a point in Falmouth Bay to A Coruna in Spain

A fleet of tall ships from around the world will arrive in the historic port of Falmouth in the days leading up to the 19th August as part of the Tall Ships Magellan-Elcano 500 Series 2021. They will be moored in the Carrick Roads and inner harbour, before embarking on a race to A Coruna in Spain.

Prior to the Falmouth race start to A Coruna, Spain, the tall ships, along with hundreds of supporting local boats, yachts and marine craft, will sail in company from their moorings in the Carrick Roads and inner harbour, along the coast past Pendennis headland and Falmouth’s beaches.

Once we know the time of the parade we'll meet up off Falmouth and join the flotilla to follow the fleet down towards Penzance (our cup of tea stop) before it heads off into the distance.

This is a truly fantastic spectacle, one not to be missed.

Other trips during the week, as the boats arrive , will be added so watch this space or add a suggestion.

I remember, in my much younger days, watching the start of some Round-the-World single handed race that was starting in Plymouth Sound.
Just as the race was due to start I was noticed that one of the French entrants was shouting something.
Approaching I noticed TWO people on board! One of whom threw himself overboard and started to swim to shore, some two or three miles out!!!
I went over and picked him up and he explained he was helping his mate stow some stuff and that as the start was perilously close, had decided to swim rather than have his friend disqualified for having two people onboard.

They have a four minute deadline to be off. Watched the team of Alex do the same this year, from my sofa.

I'm planning to be there most of the week, watching the build up and popping up and down teh coast.

Then this event will be to escort the parade of sail out of the Country.

Hi Andy/All,

I've just managed to find accomodation for us for the week so will definitely see you there - we arrive on the 15th so will also be looking for a few jaunts up and down the coast during the week.

I have a question regarding where I can keep the RIB for the week - anyone have any suggestions? We are staying in Penryn so up that end would be preferable.

If you google Falmouth Marinas you'll get a list as there are a number of them. I know they have been tricky to book this year due to the Covid rules, but this does seem to be getting easier.

We're in Mylor for the period- with a Scilly trip the 17th or 18th if the weather behaves thrown in for good measure

I would just use the visitors pontoon at Mylor, its only a 5 min drive from Penryn and is very friendly. Although Falmouth Marina is a little closer you have to travel all down the river in the 6kt speed limit but no limit from Mylor once you're out the moorings.

Should have said, no restrictions on tides for using your RIB either at Mylor (Falmouth marina has a bar) and free to launch/recover at Mylor too!!

Looks like the tall ships won't be in town after all. But we still will be and it leaves more time for Scilly trips and Penzance / Fowey cream teas

Still going to be a few great days of boating in company I hope - just not with the big sail boats as a back drop.

The area is superb for cruising which is why we're still going.

Forecast for the week looks ok for some good run abouts - with the 18th / 19th looking best so far for a Sillies lunch
