Shaint Islands from Gairloch.

Hi

I'm looking to head out to the Shaint Islands from Gairloch (Wester Ross) some time during the first two weeks of July (weather permiting). Expecting a leisurely 20-25kn cruise if anyone else is in the area the company would be good.

Hi. I am coming up your way for approx 10 days from 1st July. Launching nr Oban trying to get uo to Harris & Lewis mostly camping on beaches, but really going where the weather dictates. So this trip to to the Shaint Islands could well be on our route. I read that the islands are rat infested by the fearless & rare Black Rat,(of the London plague fame), so I am not sure this is the place to pitch a tent, but worth exploring. I shall keep a look out for more details. You should be able to track me in scotland via my AIS see marinetraffic.com search for my AIS 235087776

Hi

We're in Gairloch for the same ten days so we'll be "day tripping " from there.
Probably Skye, Raasay, Crowlin, Summer Isles as the weather dictates. So might see you somewhere along the way.

PS I think the rats are "being dealt with" but the interest is more in the wild life around the island.

Make sure you take account of the tidal drift up the Minch for your passage. I made the schoolboy error of coming from the summer isles to the shiants once and headed straight for them, against the drift, wondered why my wash was a massive arc behind me . They weren't visible from there right enough but I had them on the plotter.

Fuel (24/7) camping/caravans and pontoons at Gairloch Fuel about a 3/4 mile from pontoons & a few hundred yards from the beach if you can land there. (Also good slip with plenty of free parking.)

Laid, fuel near shore but no landing facilities (camp site).

Ullapool, fuel and various facilities but the only pontoons are for "Authorised vessels only" (cruise ship tenders). Maybe someone local can let you know if you'd get away with mooring up while you got fuel.

Lochinver, excellent facilities (pontoons, slip etc), but a bit of a walk to the petrol station.

Portree, pontoons that can be used if cruise ships not in. bit of a walk for fuel. (Slip at pier but it's a bugger to use. dingies left on it and a bad "snatch" onto a busy thoroughfare,)

Tobermory Fuel just next to pontoons.

Kyle Akin. Busy pontoon not sure about fuel.
