Just wondering if you’d be happy with a relative new comer joining the trip?

That and also the fact that I haven’t got marine vhf yet. I’d have a dry suit, life jacket etc. Fuel requirements, camping etc.

Just stretching for time and money at the moment to get vhf and chart plotter gps before the trip.

It would be my first sea outing as I currently don’t have the kit but hoped in a group I’d be safe?

My rig is a 3.3m Excel with an inflatable keel and a 15hp Mariner 4 stroke.

I’m not a gung-ho idiot hence asking if you’d be happy to have me along with less than I’d need solo.

Any minimum requirements or kit for this trip?

P.s. I’m a paramedic if that helps ha ha.

There have been relative "noobies" on trips before. Even amongst the more experienced, not everyone has a plotter, although some sort of chart/map and compass would be a good idea just in case you were to get detached from the group [the group can get spread over a mile or so and in bigger waves not everyone will be visible]. Whilst I'd normally say a VHF is pretty important: in a group like this (1) not everyone needs one; (2) you are lucky to hear it over the engine; (3) mobile coverage in the Clyde is reasonably good.

Great. Thank you. I shall watch this post.

I’ve managed to get on a RYA vhf course with exam this weekend so should hopefully have my licence through by the time of the trip. Plenty of vhf handhelds around to choose from.

I’ve looked at the ‘what do you take with you’ thread so should be fairly well prepared. But as ever any advice is appreciated.

To say I’m looking forward to it is an understatement [emoji1]

Hello Highland Haggis,

Should I be successful in acquiring a suitable setup by then, may I join you on the Scottish SIB run 2018 Largs Arran & Bute 23/24 June?

Many thanks and kind regards,

Will this still be wild camping or is it a site? It’s a shame about the camping restriction on Arron. Is this a new thing or just a precaution due to numbers?

Pretty much got all my kit sorted now. Looking forward to the trip. [emoji1303]

Thanks again for organising. See you fairly soon.

I have been round the south side and there is not many sheltered coves to go in plus the spots we could get onto all have camper-vans where as portavadie is by Boat only unless you walk in through the thick dense woods witch I don’t think many people will do the numbers do have a wee bit to play with but if you where to do the hole of the island & Bute it would really take three days it is to long to ask people to Boat that long for two days and takes the fun out of it there is a spot that can be used but the owner will only allow small amount of people if at a later date in the year I might do it again I will post it but it will be a three day trip but there are other areas that will be covered first if you would like to come on some of these trips I will keep you posted

......thanks for the explanation. Makes perfect sense. We don’t want to arrive only to find a load of Motorhomes watching sky1 on their tv’s and spoiling our peace [emoji1].

So long as I’m ok on this trip I’m hoping to do many more. That was a key reason in getting my sib.

See you next month [emoji1303]

Question: do I need an anchor for this trip? It's about the only thing I haven't got yet.

Yes it would be good but if you where hard pushed you could get away with rope to shore but at your own risk

It’s quite likely that you won’t use an anchor on the trip but that is not quite the same as don’t need one! I am assuming you have transom wheels or some other way to manhandle your boat up the shore - if it’s too heavy for that then you really do need an anchor.

Personally I wouldn’t take any small boat out on the Clyde without an anchor. On this trip you have the advantage that there will be other boats around if you get in difficulty - but don’t presume that they will always be in sight or looking in your direction. The worse the conditions are (and hence most pressing any problem is) the more the group tends to get a bit spread out as people pick their own route through the waves and different boats/helms settle into their own comfort speed.

For the sake of 40 quid I’d get one, because if this is early on your sib learning journey - after this trip you’ll be desperate to get out and do more and an anchor really should be an essential for that.

Something like this would do the job: https://www.marinescene.co.uk/produc...SABEgLZ1PD_BwE

If you are buying the bits rather than a “kit” then I’d probably look to go longer on the rope, you could afford to go narrower (beware too thin is very hard to handle). My anchor is rigged with about 30m of line but I have a second similar length I can join to it if I need to anchor somewhere deeper.

1.5-2kg is probably plenty for most medium sized sibs with a good anchor. You can get cheaper still by using a grapnel style (which are also easier to stow on a sib) but don’t skimp on the weight then.

Hi H.H
I'll be coming along.
I possibly might make it along on the Friday but not sure?
Where are you intending to camp Friday night?

Hi H H,

The FlyingDutchman and (I hope he doesn’t mind me speaking for him as we’re travelling together!) Gazzago will endeavour to be there on the Friday. 😊
