We’ll not judge… well not much.
No not the clamps David, the rubber engine mounts. As in a car, the rubber mounts that attach the engine to the cars body.
It appears that the bolts bonded into the rubber mounts have become, for want of a better word, unbounded.
It happened towards the end of the crossing from Arron to Bute. No warning and no reason why it should have happened. We had all stopped to let everyone catch up, started off again, opened up the throttle a little and the OB started bouncing like an unbalanced washing machine.
If it hadn't have been for HH I wouldn't have had a clue what to do.

Oh that's something I've never heard of. Be interesting to see what the dealer makes of it. But yep well done team on seeing you back safely.

I didn't even know they used rubber mounts....does this hold the powerhead to the leg?

I wonder if that is the only failure, or if it is a symptom of something else, such as excessive vibration elsewhere...? I hope you get a good resolution from the dealer.

Sorry, it's a force of habit from working for an engine manufacturer. Always trying to think of what might be the root cause of a problem. Very often an engine would present with something broken, but the root cause might be at the other end of a chain of events. Hopefully in this instance it's just a bad batch of, or incorrectly installed rubber mounts and the issue goes away.

Don't worry, I wasn't being serious

Getting back to the main topic of the thread.

Great trip, well organised by HH with a great bunch of guys.

No the powerhead is firmly bolted to the leg. But if you regard the saddle and clamps that go on the transom as the fixed part then the whole of the rest... powerhead and leg... has isolation rubbers between it and saddle. Years ago the degree of flex between these parts was minimal but now with greater attention to vibration some modern outboards have a real jelly wobble degree of flex.

Got back Sunday night and slept off the trip but now that I have finally managed to unload my van and get to the cameras / drones and SD cards, I have joined some of the clips together here...

Many many thanks to everyone for the adventure and especially HH for organising it.
It was fantastic. Great bunch of guys with superb experience of the area and lots of useful tips on techniques.

I'll look forward to seeing you all again.

Cheers
Paul

Hi all, I've started a new thread with regard to the upper engine mount failure mainly to highlight a possible problem for other owners of Mercury 15/20 hp EFI outboards.
