Scottish Sib Outing 2017 Oban to Mull July 22/23

[The Gurnard]

Hi again guys..I have been quite industrious today and have put together the first part of the outing. I keep my movies under 10 minutes long ..hence the reason it will be in “parts”

The name of the movie on my Intro screen may seem a little strange as I titled it “Into the Wilderness” Friends.

The reason is I have been making a spoof GoPro movie of the Cinema movie “Into the Wild”. My movie is in chapters and covers my video adventures on the North West of Scotland this year. This video be included in the series which can be found for free viewing on my U Tube channel.

I called it “Friends” as it illustrates the dying thoughts of Chris McCandless of “Into the Wild”. A true story of a guy who realised that adventures were best when shared with others who could understand him.

Soundtrack is Runrig playing “Siol Ghoraidh” Its sung in the mother tongue of the north..and is basically a chant as the different clansmen gather together. I thought it an apt track for the occasion.

I must confess I didn't bother with my Go- Pro as I knew you would have yours.
I also knew that you would make a cracking job of putting together a video / story of the trip.

Glad the weekend went well guys... and as usual thanks for a great video record Gurnard**. Despite still sporting my Devon tan from the past two weeks I will really miss our summer West Coast fix... for the first year in decades actually.

If the planets align maybe a (chilly?) autumn long weekend visit.... fingers crossed.

**Gurnard I also much enjoyed the rest of the Wilderness videos. We first visited that area in 1986 from a shoreside perspective staying by Little Loch Broom. We took photos from Mellon Udrigle beach in similar blue sky/blue sea conditions... another case where our footsteps have crossed decades apart.

Moored just off the beach was a yacht with its name writ large down the hull... "Sheer Magic".

A very apt description of the place.

well got back from a great trip, great bunch of lads, all boats performed well as said stevie has a trim problem but can easily be rectified.

the joke is on me re toilet i like to be ensuite whatever my accommodation.

lesson lerned i took far too much kit but first time wild camp so will trim it down next time and there will be a next time for sure.

thanks to HH/anchor for organising & gurnard for his wealth of information on route.

fuel wise i was over cautious not believing the manual gauge and dipping the tank but i have far more in the tank than i thought i had and i will top up to see fuel used for an accurate consumption rate, thanks to stevie & HH for fuel support

midge wise both smidge & lifeststems endurance worked well for me the only bits are from those that get through the clothing.

looking forward to the rest of the movie gurnard the gimbal is worth every penny

Just topped up my tank and did a fuel itinerary check. I used in total 17.5 litres of fuel with my Tohatsu 20hp.
Fuel wise I took 12.5 litres in my tank + 1 x 5 litre can and 1 x 20 litre can.
My boat tank is now full as is my 5 litre can. I have 2.5 litres give or take a few 100ml lift in the 20 litre can.
Dunno how many miles we covered. Alway amazes me how frugal the new 4 strokes are.

I was bang on the button with my fuel load.

I came home with approx 1/3 left which is what I plan for. Difficult to give accurate use as I emptied 3 x 5 litre containers but I normally get 6 litres in a 5 litre container (The ones garages sell) so that make 18 litres..I also emptied a 3 litre container..and my 25 litre tank has only around quarter left .. so I will round it up to 40 litres.

I took 55 litres with me. I also burn two stroke oil which you guys don’t.

Total mileage that I estimate you did was approx 90 miles. I did a few more as I went through the race twice on the way back as I enjoy it ...and my first time through ..I noticed the camera lens got wet so had to go back to reshoot more footage.

Anyhoo..enough from me about fuel..its worth every penny to have adventures like this .

Donnie: the video kit you have invested in-and your skill in using it to capture the essence of the trip - is remarkable! Has anyone offered a packet of money to do it professionally? Thanks for your very kind words Stevie and Kaman ..and you are correct..Im not interested in money ..it means little to me. It brought me nothing but grief when I had some.

I use the same Gopro as everyone else .. so perhaps all that is different in my movies to other’s gopro movies .. is the way I see the beauty in nature .. my love of the sea .. and my highland sense of humour ?

I have made some money in the past from my photographs and story books .. wedding and christenings too .. but mostly I did it for free to those that were good to me.

What made me this way ?

Cheers for a great week end with everyone. Got back late afternoon yesterday after an extra nights camp North of Loch Lomond. A good few hours to unpack and wash every thing down along with the engine flush.
The videos are belting so far,,,, shown the Wife, she loves it, wants a gopro now.
Fuel wise, took 66lts and used 32. That's not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Been on ebay and order some stainless bits for the boat after getting some ideas from the weekend. Sorry if my name threw a few people when we met and I was a foot shorter than 6'6".

Didn't realise my hair had gone so grey😮.
I concur it was a great weekend and everyone got on swimmingly.
I was up for another night but the rather bumpy crossing from Lismore back to Ganavan bay shook my injuries up and kinda knocked the wind out of my sails.
Was a very memorable weekend indeed☺
