Round England/wales start July23rd

Hi
We That is father and son (11years) are planning to go from Berwick upon tweed to Siloth (near Carlise) to complete a round england/wales cruise. We can then plan for Scotland next year (to complete a round brittain) We are not aiming for speed records - just good enjoyable safe cruising. Enjoying the variations in coastline and people along the way.
Friend will bring the trailer back home, after launch, and be available 'on standby' until coming out again at the finish.

2 weeks passout gained from home - with various permutations of plan depending on weather. Aiming for legs of 100+ miles per day. Petrol availability is problematic! Leaving Sunday 23rd July. doing B&B.
I am hoping to meet some of you regular RIB cruisers/posters along the way.
Will\post more as things come together.

Paul

Hi Paul,
Good luck with the planning. Make sure Brixham is a stop over for you.

1 week to go

Countdown this week.
try and finish up at work - boat nearly ready, take list at hand, packing commencing.
David Thankyou for your invite to Brixham - I have not been to Brixham since the pier at Torquay burnt down in about 1976! suoer place.
Brixham is in the 'bolt hole' list if the scedule changes.

Now several people want me to post a daily update - but ribs and pc are not compatible yet. So the plan is to allow my wife to post a daily update or bulletin. letting you know how far where to next plus any 'happenings'

What I must learnt from JK is should we create a new logon id for her. she is a bit nervous and thinks we (ribsters) are a bit strange!

plan currently is launch at Berwick upon tweed on sunday 23rd at 13.00
go clockwise - 1st planned stop is Sunderland.

I will prepare a couple or three images of boat and crew for next post
Paul

Hi everyone.

I am the guy that is doing the support driving for Paul & Bryn.
I live in Kempston Beds with my wife Sue and our Bull Terrier "Billy" plus lots of fish inside and outside the house!!
We will leave Towcester early Sunday morning sharing the driving and then I need to get the Land rover and trailer back untill they need picking up.

Thats it really, will update with any info I think will be interesting as will Paul and Catherine ( If she plucks up the courage to join in ) lol.
Will try and get some pics on, but not sure of your rules via size etc; yet.

phoenixpete.

P.S. where are the smiley's?

Isle of Man stopover

If you turn up near Isle of Man over w/e of 29/30 July, the national 18's sailing champs are on in Port st Mary, so there'll be things going on over the w/e.

Let us know if you'll be around - I have jerrycans so can help with unleaded (although it's over £1 a litre here before the latest Middle East action)

All the best boys!
Have a great time and I hope that all goes well. I'd offer you a welcome, but you will have taken a wrong turn if you end up in Manchester!

Central Control Reporting

Hi all,

This is land locked Central Control for Paul & Bryn's adventure around England & Wales (and she who granted pass out!)

As you can see they are all packed and alarms set for 5.30am (don't wake me). So the schedule for tomorrow:

Drive to Berwick-on-Tweed, Launch and the aim is to head for Blythe or Sunderland for first nights stop. A shorter stint for the first day to break everyone in gently!!!

Well I will do my best to keep you all up to date.

Speak again tomorrow evening.

Kathryn (the long suffering)

Round England & Wales - Day 1

Here's the first report of many (we hope).

Paul, Bryn, Phoenixpete and Marikh left on time this morning - and yes I was awake (just) to wave them off. The trip up went well - not much traffic at that time of the morning.

They arrived at Berwick-on-Tweed at approx 12.30pm, and from all accounts the boat launched well and Paul & Bryn waved their farewells to Pete and sped into the distance.

Weather was good, with South Westerly force 2-3, a little chop with quite a few complete calm sections.

Sightseeing for today was Lindesfarne and Longstone lighthouse, but the excitement of the day for Bryn was to see Seals basking in the water.

All arrived safely at Sunderland, having done approx 65 nmiles by 3.30pmish.
They found a small hotel for the night and spent early evening on the beach with Bryn enjoying a swin in the sea.

I wish to say a huge thank you to Pete - (our road support/recovery team), who will no doubt make his own report tomorrow, but his trip wasn't as trouble free as Pauls. Locked on brakes, smoke and huge traffic jam on the M1, meant he didn't get back to 'control' until 9.15pmish. So thanks a billion!

Tommorrows schedule is Sunderland to Grimsby or Hull - the latter preferably as this is a fuel stop, but I believe it is 'locked' so is rather dependant on tide.

Well thats all from Central Control. More tomorrow.

Hi Guy's

Codprawn. That is my TVR Sagaris,Left it at Paul & Kathryn's while I did the trip up to berwick.
As Kathryn said the trip up was fine but on the way back the brakes on the trailer somehow locked on, first thing I noticed was smoke pouring from the axles, pulled over on the hard shoulder, brake cables were all very tight and the heat must have melted some of the grease in the hubs as it was everywhere, all over the inside of the wheels and tyres.
Got the brakes freed off by tuging on the cables and driving backwards then forwards which did the trick, but for a more permenant fix I drove to the next services and loosened the adjusters on the drums.
Sat in traffic for 2 hours around Sheffield at Bluewater I think with the 2 big chimneys on the left and shopping centre on the right. Got past that then got held up for another 1 1/2 hours as the M1 was closed from 15-14 due to a bad accident.
Apart from that it was great "lol." The Discovery was faultless with the V6 diesel, towing was effortless and very smooth.
Back at home now untill Paul & Bryn need picking up in 2 weeks time.
Took some pics.

Round England & Wales - Day 2

After a full English breakfast and once they got the engine fired up (see starting problem in Engine thread - any advice appreciated), Paul & Bryn got under way at 7.30am.

Conditions were smooth & Calm - so calm infact, Bryn fell asleep in the bow, mid morning!

Headed past Middlesborough Oil Terminal and the vast Supertankers, coastline changed from cliffs and 50m sea depth to low land/sand and 20m depth.

Carried on round Flamborough head and onto Grimsby. On arriving at Grimsby, they were unable to find the fuelling rig - no-one was particularly helpful in trying to locate it either. So the decision was made to go up the Humber (15nmiles) to Hull. Arrived at approx 2.30pm but had to wait for the tide to get into the locked marina.

So todays facts: Distance travelled 129nmiles. Average fuel consumption 1.15litres per nmile.
Highlight of the day for Bryn, seeing a porpoise and a load of Puffins.

Schedule for Tue 25th July; Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft or possibly Levington if they have an exceptional day.

Thats all folks - Central Control - OUT
