N.Wales Round Anglesey RIBnet Rally 2012 April 28th

After the success of the North Wales Easter RIBnet rally 2011, I feel I need something to aim for through these dark nights and something to get our season off to a flyer again.

(Plus Kerny appears to need a thread to distract the bored Hadd, TT, Willk et al from picking on him whilst little U boating, i mean boating takes place)

We had 18 boats from all over the UK last time, (some from as far as Nottingham) travelling from Porth Daniel, Menai Bridge to Morfa Nefyn and back (all in one piece safely I might add). Plus we had a journo on board who got us published in Rib International magazine with over 5 pages of fine pics. Though Nitrox evidently organised the whole thing according the magazine article! ( TT and I are still trying to think how to exact our revenge.)

Anyways, enough of that success, during that time many expressed great interest in circumnavigating Anglesey itself (some actually did that day!) so.... let's get it on and see if we can get over the 18 boat mark this time!!!!

I'm planning on launching Friday 27th for the season, then weather permitting, heading around the island starting from Menai Bridge again. High tide is around 3pm, so we have all day to potter around anti clockwise, then clear the bar at Caernarfon and come through the bridges with plenty of water. It will finish with a meal and plenty of rusty nails in the Gazelle Hotel. (Book early if you want to stay there as the RIBnobbers dive in quick. However there are plenty of hotels in Beaumaris and Menai, a 3 minute taxi ride either side.)

We can stop at Beaumaris and Moelfre if people wish to see the lifeboat, Holyhead marina for fuel if people need (all types,petrol, food, beer.. sorry, water! how irresponsible, though our boat does tend to use more beer per mile than petrol )

More specifics nearer the time though, whatever people want, so get your name down and we can start a roll call list!

(IMHO unless v calm, a 5m+ deep V is about the minimum to go around the island, due to tides and winds in all directions as you go around, weather is very variable. It can be flat calm on one side and then wind over tide with overfalls in places on the other. All are welcome though to tag along for sections they are comfortable with. I'd strongly recommend the tough charts for the area. We seemed to cruise at around 23 knots last time (unless youre in a black osprey ))

Sounds a cracking journey, how many NM is that likely to be?

Might be more than just interesting in a 5m rib but you never know what the sea state is going to be at the time

85 miles. <5m I'd be v wary unless a beautiful day. You'd make it, probably, but it could take 8.5 hrs at 10mph!!! A 5m rib can be slowed to that speed with only a small sea. Common sense is needed.

Re fuel you might be right. Most should be able to carry enough to get around in one.

More the merrier, as I say, it would be good to beat 18 boats this time. The benefit of Menai Strait is that even if its awful weather, you can head one way up the strait to the sheltered side of the island and have a good run out/meet up. So it means it is normally always worth the journey to there unless it's a force 8.

Hi si , we did a cruise plus fishing trip around Anglesey over 2 days at end of July this yr with pikey dave we had a great weekend, i did it in a 5.2 seapro , its not the best rib to go round in, but we did, & only used 80lts of fuel as well ,weather was great on saturday but changed on sunday came back in a force 4-5 very choppy , if the weathers good you will do it , but like paul said it can change

Indeed, unfortunately so much is reliant on the weather.
Would like, hope to, participate at some level.
Have to try and get some coastal experience in to guage suitability.
Don't suppose there is a great deal of difference between a 5m and anything upto 6m but guess when your talking about 6.5m plus the extra hull size and weight provide a much more stable craft which cuts through chop far better.

The beauty of Angelesy is there's always somewhere to run & hide if it does turn snotty. You'd be suprised what a well prepared RIB can handle, it's usually the crew that gives up first.

That's my attitude if you've not got the bottle, stick to canal's!
Done quite a few days around the menai while on holiday in North Wales and it's always looked about the best place for boating short of traveling to the south coast.

A good 5m + rib is well capable of taking some rough, the only difference is, that you do get knocked about a bit more than a 6.5 mtr rib. The larger ribs are lot smoother due to the extra weight and length. Don't forget the under 5 mtr round Great Britain challenge a few years back

Is the plan to definitely make a stop at Holyhead?

If so will fuel be available or are we looking to carry sufficient to cover the whole trip?

Not sure if Holyhead have fuel. We will stop there for a refill of main tanks in the shelter of the marina, for those that need to whilst having a chat and a sandwich etc but I'd take enough to get round!
