Lunch Solent/IoW Sat 28 Feb

Is anyone out and about tomorrow who would like to meet for lunch in Ventnor?

The weather looks reasonable and the tides are excellent.

Hi David
We can't make it tomorrow (Saturday) but are 99% sure we will be out on Sunday - even if it does look like the weather might not be as good as for Saturday. If you don't get any company for tomorrow but want to meet up somewhere on Sunday let me know! The same goes for anyone else of course!

Sunday is fine by me (although finding crew will be harder; but I'm fine to go it on my own if necessary).

Weather may be a bit wet, but hey ho!

Where are people launching from? I'm coming from Poole and can RV there or at Yarmouth or even (if your're all coming from the East) Ventnor itself.

Hi David - I'm possibly out ouf Christchurch at about 10.30 , but only a quick hour as a first run of the season shakedown of the boat ( if it starts)- Shearwater - a bit bigger & more suited to distance than my Avon you have seen me in ! I'll keep an eye out as I'll be between Mudeford & Yarmouth somewhere .

If all goes well I will try & be out Sunday too.

Not good for me if I'm not back in the harbour by around 1 latest so lunch is out.

Beat you to it (just!).

If you want company for the shakedown tomorrow, I'm more than happy to fit in (would be good) and can be off Christchurch tomorrow as you want if that would help.

PM me or call me if you already have my number.

Don't understand the timings of these posts! I thought I had won by 1 minute. Story of my life.

Relax, chill: I'm out tomorrow in Poole/Christchurch Bays and am very much up for Sunday to Ventnor as well.

Where are people launching/coming from on Sunday? Tell me and I'll be there!

If anyone's around on Saturday (today!), I'll be around off Hegistbury/Christchurch around 10.30 and can make points East (or West!) accordingly.

David

We will be launching either from under the Itchen Bridge (Crosshouse Hard) or Swanwick - maybe depending on whether Southampton are playing at home or not tomorrow. We usually get in the water by about 10.30 - 11.00 so if anyone has a plan we'll fit in. Luke - We will have 2 adults and 2 children on the boat but can easily fit one more in if you want to join us - I don't think S'ton is the ideal pick-up location from where you are but PM or call me on 07840 975807 if you want a ride. Managed to a) start the engine , b) get out of Mudeford without grounding it !

Caught up with Avocet ( just) off Hengistbury and ran up towards Hurst for a few miles - mirror calm out there - fantastic ! Everything worked OK on the boat so came back & cleaned it for an hour.

Pics of Avocet @ around 40knts.

Luke - sorry missed your post but I may be out tomorrow so may well be in touch. Pete

It was a beautiful day out there - and the forcast has improved for tomorrow with Dorset now remaining dry and drizzle only in Devon and Cornwall. I'm definitely up for Ventnor tomorrow but the little Avocets have other plans and Mrs Avocet isn't sure. I may, therefore, be on my own and, even if not, will certainly have room for Luke whom I could pick up from Lymington at, say, 11.30(ish) with a view to doing an anti-clockwise circumnavigation of the IoW, stopping at Ventnor for lunch. How does that fit in with everyone else?

In the meantime here's some pictures of Blackroady also at around 40kts:

Sorry I could not get out to join you today, but am planning to be out tomorrow (sunday) launching out of Christchurch. No definate plans yet, as that will depend on the number of crew and where they want to lunch. However, will be listening out on 77 and may be able to talk to you this time! Ariel was full of water last time ...

No problems about today: it was a good trip but really only to assist Blackroady if his shakedown proved less than perfect.

If the conditions are like today, a trip to Ventnor (not necesarily round the island) should be quite quick and it's fairly unusual to be able to tie up in Ventnor over a whole lunchtime and still get out afterwards!

Have still not heard from Luke (if he's not coming, I can go direct to the St Catharine's) but will be monitoring 16 and 77 in any event and should be able to catch you in Christchurch Bay.

I'll need fuel too. How about an 11.30 RV at Yarmouth and see what conditions/weather are like?

Can still pick up Luke (if he wants) from Lymington before.

Does that suit Trevor (whose closest run to Ventnor is the other way)?

Hi All
We should be at Clashot at about 11 and are happy to RV there before going on to Yarmouth. We don't have fixed plans so we can discuss where to go from there when we see what the conditions are.

OK. So Rv at Yarmouth 11.30. Take on fuel and assess.

Sounds like a plan to me.

I've never been to Ventnor (only past it), so I'm up for that but am happy to go along with whatever.

See y'all tomorrow: I'm off to bed.

David

Crept out of Mudeford - thought it was a bit too cold for me (not really dressed for it today compared to yesterday ) & came back . Saw 250 on his way out ( and heard him on the radio ) down the river . Fingers corssed for mid march that there was another thread about . Hope everyone had a good time today.

An excellent day out.in lovely(ish) weather and good conditions.

DizzyLizzy, Neil Harvey and I met at Yarmouth at 11.30(ish), fuelled and headed of around midday. Put a couple of calls out for 250 but nothing heard.

Safely arrived and moored in Ventnor. Only room for one boat on the pontoons, so DizzyLizzy acted as taxi and the others moored on buoys in the small harbour. A lovely lunch outside at the Spyglass Inn on a terrace above the sea. Both Mrs Avocet (who finally chose to come along) and I cannot recommend the devilled crab and the Ventnor Golden Bitter highly enough. Katie (off DizzyLizzy) also rated the burger.

After lunch, we carried on round the island saying goodbye to DizzyLizzy and Neil just before Cowes in what were slightly rougher conditions (now wind against tide) than earlier.

Refuelled in Yarmouth on completion of the circumnavigation. 58 litres used.

Then back across Christchurch and Poole Bays just as the sun was beginning to set above the Purbecks. A lovely day out and nice to meet the others again. Already looking forward to the next one.

Not many pictures but for what they're worth:
