Cannes to Corsica (July 2006)

I'm thinking about undertaking the 100 mile crossing from Cannes to Corsica this summer in my new Capelli Tempest 750 rib (7.5m, 225hp Yam). I'm advised that it's about 3.5 hours across the med if conditions are ok.

Has anyone undertaken this journey or perhaps share their experience of Corsica? I have done a search on the forum and read the relevant posts.

I think the journey is quite ambitious; the aim is to get the boat to Corisica so that we can enjoy the coastline around the island, however the journey there is the problem. I either go direct or follow the coastline around Italy and cross near Elba, this would be longer but closer to the coast.

I have 6 years boating experience, but have never undertaken an off-shore trip such as this.

Any help appreciated.

Re:

Hi,

Try posting/searching on the forum at www.mby.com, there are threads on there regarding Corsica and there are peeps on there with experience of the trip. From what i've been told its about 5 hours from St Tropez in good conditions, averaging 35knts.

Hope this helps.

Have a look at Rod Heikels Med France and Corsica Pilot;

You need to be sure of the weather conditions because from what I read the wind can change directiion and strength with little warning due to the mountainous coast line;

By all accounts its agreat place to explore by boat

Hi Vinnie,

Only just seen this thread.... Corsica is very welcoming... Great facilities. I’ve not gone from Cannes but I did do the crossing from Puntone Italy, just below Elba few years ago. See my article here….

and you can get details of the marinas here.

Thanks. I've spoken to a few locals and I'm going to make the crossing from Cannes direct to Calvi, preferable early in the morning when the wind is low. I've been testing the boat out and it feels very strong and alot more capable than the 5m Zodiac(90hp) I had previously, which gives me alot more confidence.

I've just bought a Navman 6500 (Chartplotter) and 7100 (VHF) so I'll be setting that up in the coming weeks. I'm advised that it's French regulation to have a liferaft as well if going more than 2 miles out, so I now need to look into that and also whatever other equipment I need, I'm curious about Radar Reflectors.

I'm going to speak with the Harbor Master and get their advise, apparantly I wont be the only one heading out there in the summer.

Cheers.
