All joking aside, having now done a slightly more accurate speed -time -fuel analysis, it would be about 50/50 for me - I forgot to add the car fuel to get the rib to Largs in the first place...... D'oh! Time to go make another mug of coffee.......

The beaches look very shallow around Drumore. I would have thought looking on google earth that they also were only useable at around high water?
I have not commited to a single launch site as yet, the only reason I thought of Isle of Whithorn was because it looked the most useable online. There are two slips there inside and outside the harbour with the outside one looking the best. I have not actually used any of them.
It is also the nearest one to IOM that I can find.
Does anybody have the tide times for whithorn and area for 5th June to see whether tides will serve or whether they are going to be a factor in launching?

I would tend to agree with you Bruce from looking on line it look like the easiest slip for access at all time and being closest to IOM was an added bonus.

I may try and have a look down there sometime before we make a final decision.

Bruce & Scotseats, there is a village website www.isleofwhithorn.com/sailing.asp that has some local info re the harbour tides etc on it and the local sailing club's email is wigtonbaysailingclub@yahoo.co.uk

I'll go check the plotter tide tables later for that date and see what they are. It would be good if we can get a little group together and go across to meet up with the main group.

seem to remember the main slip went into the harbour and the other went into the water without the benefit of jetty or tie up point and could be affected by weather not sure if this has changed. it was a few years ago opps seems it was about 1994 & 1995

Quick thought for the administrators.....

On the assumption there seems to be two main flotillas, is it worth splitting this thread into "IoM from the North" & "IoM from the South"? - that way the gory details of one won't get tangled up in the other, or more likely lost in the depths of another conversation?

If the idea is to meet up then it might be sensible to keep it all in one thread until such time as the fundamentals have been confirmed (dates, departure point options, one day or two with an overnight, accomodation / campsites, attending the TT, tides at IoM for the harbour etc). As that is going to end up in multiple threads.

Sounds like there are possibly 4 separate departure points at the moment?

North Wales
Whitehaven
Galloway coast
Ireland

I guess its quite possible that if there are several people coming from Ireland it will split N/S too.

Perhaps each 'post title' could help distinguish the departure point where appropriate - which will help us split it up if/when required.

Does anyone know if Whitehaven has a slipway, can only see a crane on the marina site and I've yet to hear back from them regards the slip?

Just checked Boatlaunch- there appears to be a slip in the harbour, no idea if it's linked to the marina or not.

Edit - just looked at the satelite pic - looks like at least one slip in the harbour, possibly two. You will need to lock out tho', so I guess you;re talking +/- a couple of hours either side of high water......

Why not give them a call?

Scroll down to the three small pics, the one on the left is a satellite map, zoooooom in, and when you get the whole harbour filling the frame, it's at the root of the second leg form the left (the one with the spaceship parked at the end)

There's definetly a slip down the RH side of that pier, and the big blob between it and the "1st on the left" finger might be a huge slip - I think the white dots may be a load of dinghies launching.

Having said that, their answer will be a lot more definitive!

I was having another look at the slips in norn iron ... Killough Harbour has a good slip and may indeed be nearer than coming down from Bangor or Donaghadee ( might be a bit more ok for a DL Landy also!!

I haven't used this slip before so I'll try and get a race down there some day this week and have a look. No chance of launching at the moment - the boat is up your way Willik in the shed for the winter.

Anyone else used Killough before?

Killough is certainly closer and would knock at least 40nm off the return trip, which is a lot of jerry cans

Obviously you'll look at the tides before checking the slip and if this jaunt goes off there's a few beers owing to you for research fees!

Now, if I can work out which shed it is...

Tonymac wasn't keen. I've never checked the launch/parking there so am deferring to local knowledge

OK I'll look at both this week. There had been some talk of increased fees in Ardglass bit I'll check it out.

As for what shed Willk - you'll be lucky!! Have you counted them all? I'll give you a clue - it's white!

BTW there'd be a greater chance of getting the TV license - an that's slim!
