Very sorry to here your bad news. I'd be very wary if the Insurance company appoint Yacht Claims to deal with you!.. I had a lot of trouble with Norwich Union hettling my claim paid, as Yacht claims demed the boat yard I was in not suitably secure

In the end I used a claim fighter who sorted things out, probably would have been best if I used him in the first place.

Well, I sure am sorry to hear about you misfortune at the hands of some cowardly scumbags. That said, I have had the misfortune of living in some rather high crime areas in the past, and have a couple of suggestions that MAY help you keep you next rig from getting kiped…

1. If your trailer coupler is not welded onto the tongue of the trailer, unbolt it and the safety chains and store them in your garage when not in use.
2. Buy a spare set of steel wheels that fit your hubs (not aluminum or galvanized) and have your local welder, weld on two pieces of “L” angle on each wheel. When your rig is parked in your driveway, jack it up and swap out the wheels for your “theft deterrent” steel wheel / chocks. Alternately, you could simply block the axle and remove the wheels, but be sure to put the lug nuts back on the hubs, as removing all of them will increase the amount of time they have to spend while kiping you rig.
As a general rule of thumb, it is always easier to remove bits (theft deterrent items) than it is to install missing pieces or jury rig something to overcome missing pieces. As you well know, a wheel lock or coupler lock can simply be torched off in a matter of seconds with a portable Oxy/Acet torch set up, but a missing coupler or wheels necessitates a considerable amount of pre-theft planning, as they must know the bolt pattern and size to get the correct wheels.

I know all these suggestions add considerable time to your pre-trip planning every time you want to use your boat… and that is unfortunate, but kind of the idea. If it’s a pain in the butt for you, it will be a bigger pain in the butt for the thieves, and the long it takes, the better from a theft deterrent perspective.

Another thing that you may find entertaining, is every couple of years when your petrol cans get all faded and turn pink, is to fill them about ¼ full of old petrol and the rest of the way with water. “accidently” forget to lock them up and leave them in plain sight. It will save you the hassle of disposing of the bad petrol and the faded pink container, while also providing a measure of sadistic satisfaction knowing that somewhere there is some thieving bastage sitting on the side of the road with a partial tank of contaminated fuel….

Taking the coupling hitch off of the trailer works well, it's only two bolts. I also remove the wheels from mine during the winter and lock them in a seperate building.

Leave one wheel on with a wheel clamp, or your insurance may be void

Yes, I know of an insurance claim which was rejected on theft of a new-ish caravan, which had 'winter wheels' fitted, rather than an approved wheelclamp.

Could well be - having already had repairs to get it to this condition - bow tube/ roller was cut off to get the roller fitting off. Price is steep consideing it was dumped in a field !

This is probably our old hull. I know this yard bought the remains from the insurance company.
