Being out in difficult conditions IS fun, providing it's not bad enough to be dangerous. More of a challenge, and can be very rewarding. It's like mountain biking in the rain, get soaked, get cold, but is extremely enjoyable once you get into it.

I agree with you the fun is when is bumpy, wavy and you just fly on top.
HOWEVER, I disagree with the term 'COLD'. Have you loooked at the pics?? The sea is short of murcy colour, fog on top of the needles. OMG!!! wouldn't wish that to my worst enemy!!

I'll post some pics from the Aegean from last August with BLUE SEAS, No clouds, 3-5 meters waves the RIB Flying and 37 deg C. No wet gear, no gloves just swimming shorts
This is WHAT I CALL FUNN!!
Believe you me if you try this once you will never ever want to go anywhere else again. EVER!!
I will also post some pics from Greece at the end opf this week. Weather sunny, bright, temp 15-21 deg C, sea state calm today but force 6-8 by the weekend and this is winter.

What's wrong with cold? I love being out in the cold. And diving in the cold is fun too. Nothing better than spending 30 minutes or so in 4 degree water in a leaking drysuit. This wonderful weather is all part of what Britain is!

Weather forecasters got it wrong again, it was forecast force 5/6 gusting 7, but the solent was flat calm all weekend, we went to the needles to have abit of fun and try the new engine out.

Julian, the fourstroke is excellent, very different to drive. I wish I had bought one originally.

Well said Matt. Its all part of the British RIBing experience, very enjoyable.

Manos, I make a point of never claiming to be sane. I know I'm insane, but flat, calm seas with the sun beating down all day would get very boring very quickly for me. The occasional bit of sun is fine, but every day? No way!

I agree that the forecasters got it wrong. I was out all day on the Solent as well and stopped in Priory Bay for lunch and almost warm enough to have a swim!!

In this country we have a saying which goes along the lines of
"why look at the mantlepiece when you are stoking the fire". which I thjink can aplly to the weather conditions and ribbing

If you choose to go out in the good days only then you may only use your boat for 15 days a year. I have to make payments on my boat all year round and therefore I want to use them all year round, cos I can't stand wasting money.

Being out in the winter and difficult conditions isn't fun but it is very exhillerating and challenging. and if you got the right clothes on then it's not that cold or wet either.

having said all that , I must admit that women do look slightly less attarctive in a Musto offshore suit so the summer has it's advantages .

What I go out in the cold I don't really notice the cold until I start the long crawl back up the Itchen at 6 knots.

I look forward to seeing you in the Brass monkeys race, make sure you bring your thermals with you.

I agree with all of what you say.
However, as you may not know after many years of owning SIBs and later RIBs I decided and bought a Sunseeker 48 ft in the UK. I kept the boat for 4 years . It cost me an arm and a leg in maintenace, insurance, marina mooring fees and installments to the bank. I sold it and I am happy now (so is my bank manager). The reason was number of the times I used it in a year (10 max). The sodding weather never let us go out from Hamble, it was either raining, hailing, blowing a gale etc etc.
We all had the appropriate clothing my wife, son and my little daughter just born then. But it was uncomfortable. VERY!!
I got a new RIB last year from SAfrica. Send all the moneys in instalments the boat was delivered in 4 months and is a VERY NICE BOAT indeed.
I trusted the people (Falcon) who sold it and I now sell the same RIBs for them in the UK and Greece.
I sailed the boat round the UK in 2 or 3 occasions. But the sodding weather again made me decide that the boat is better to be kept in Greece. There is no fun in it when you freeze your b....s to death worm clothing or not. Get cold sprey on your face and you can't feel your nose (even in July and August).
The boat now is in Greece. I will be getting a racing RIB (Falcon 700RSR Racing or Falcon 850RSR Racing) by Feb (keep fingers crossed) this boat I intetend to keep in the UK and use it for racing and pleasure (the later weather permitting).
I fully understand that one makes due with what one has and in the UK one does not have that many worm days. I suppose I am lucky enough to be able to go on hols to warmer climates and enjoy my boat too.
The moral of this little story is that I like sailing in the UK (as a matter of fact I enjoy it with the right company) as you say is challenging and is an adventure each time one gets out there in a 5, 6,7, 8, 9 or 10 mtr RIB. One always finds something new to tackle.
However, I LOVE sailing in warm weather. And also love the girl;s in their bikini tops (or not)

Honestly now who doesn't.

Wavehumper will try my best to be at the 'brass monkey race' with my warm clothing always!!!
