Round Ireland Powerboat and RIB Challenge 2013 - Skerryvore

I had the opportunity to join Redbay Boats new Stormforce 950 rib Skerryvore
which was the Suzuki sponsor boat, powered by a Suzuki 300hp.
Simrad had kitted out the electronics and altogether was an awesome boat.

I, as part of the flying test monkeys, joined for a few legs
and managed to get some footage from various days.

I will cut short clips and some stills, to give you an idea of what a few of the legs were like.
Donegal Dan

As many of the entrants will have noticed, in Ireland we have big rain,
which is both "wet" and "painful" at 32 knots

Taken just after Rathlin Island on the north coast, Bangor to Killybegs Leg

Shortly after the rain, the skies cleared once more, the seas were calm and all 300 ponies were opened up...

I have another couple clips from this day, will post shortly once I get them cut

We swung by the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge
The sun came out, and the shadow of the boat on the seabed was something else.
So the GoPro got christened, took a plunge, and thankfully no bubbles

After the rope bridge, we took a run over to Inishtrahull Island, Ireland's 2nd most northerly island.
The clip has 4 short cut clips, showing the entrance to the pier.
Great spot to drop off, just let the Wildlife warden know your landing !

After Inishtrahull, the camera got put away till the entrance for a while…
There was some serious boating to be done! but I cracked it open for Killybegs.
Absolutely cracking run around Sleibh League sea cliffs, and then into the bay.

So, due to having way too much fun I didn't record on the GoPro till Fenit,
This was the Fenit to Dingle day, and was an eventful day.
It was "unsurprisingly" raining - it is Ireland after all, and the reason it is so green from space
Clip is Skerryvore leaving fuel dock, and gathering with the fleet of ribs for the impending departure.

Once underway, the rain, well it stayed with us for a lot of the day..
Fenit Lighthouse was really nice, and the rain kept the seas down….
Clip is a long one, but some of the nicest calm sea footage I got.

About 30 mins out of Feint we encountered a pod of approx 40 dolphin,
they were not really for playing, even though a couple did decide to bow ride with skerryvore.
Later we had hot lemon for company, running up the coast of Kerry, running towards the Great Blasket Islands
before rounding the corner and running east towards Dingle

Last clip - thankfully you all say, and its a little long…
As we arrived in Dingle, passing two boatloads of tourists heading out to sea,
we didn't have the heart to tell them that Fungi was around the corner in Fenit
shooting some pool with his mates and that today they were not going to see any dolphins

Dingle was a lovely run in, with a meandering entrance to the harbour, we ran in
just under flank, and yes, was still raining. It had been raining in Dingle for quite some time, as seen from the bog water discolouration visible just as we enter the harbour.

The bay is split nicely between working fleet and pleasure boating, with plenty
room to accommodate both. Dingle is very well catered to tourists and was
although more used to tourists arriving, the fleet of boats did raise a head or two.

At this point the flying test monkeys had done their good work, and it was time to depart by land the following morning. As we left, tear in eye, Skerryvore and
Hot Lemon slipped their moorings and progressed to Crosshaven for Friday night,
and arrived Saturday in Kilmore Quay completing the Round Ireland Powerboat challenge 2013 Skerryvore covering 911 Nm and holding 21 knot average.

Well done to Redbay and Suzuki's Skerryvore she rode the seas well,
even took the Flying test monkeys for a ride !

Into the West

When Team Suzuki decided to go with only one engine on the Redbay Stormforce 950 that had been specially built for them, they were probably showing confidence in their product. When Tom McLaughlin, M.D. Redbay Boats decided to handicap them with a pair of Flying Test Monkeys - he was showing great confidence in his...
Our invite came as something of a surprise, we'd just returned the 600hp Stormforce 1050 from Easdale and I think that Tom was so pleased to see her back intact that his guard dropped momentarily when we were discussing the Round Ireland Challenge. Maybe he was feeling sorry for us as he knew he'd sold the 1050 and we'd be inconsolable.
We were told to join the boat in Antrim and stay with her as long as we wanted, so we laid our plans carefully - opting to leave a car in Antrim, travel the fearsome northern leg together and collect the expedition prepared Land Rover in Killybegs. From there we would alternate days between it and the boat, a plan that worked very well as one party was able to arrange accommodation and run errands for RIBnetters who were without land based support while the other party was at sea on Skerryvore.

Letters of Marque

As the Official Sponsor craft, Skerryvore had no designated role other than to get from A to B, look good and enjoy the ride. This broad remit saw her leave last most mornings, run where the mood took her, stop to enjoy whatever sights caught her crew's eye and play catch up in the afternoons to arrive in the first stick of RIBs. Other than checking on a few smaller boats and giving Paul Lemmer an extended tow she ranged free over the water each day. My personal highlights included blasting up around Torr Head to exit Rathlin Sound into the first of many downpours (see video above), encountering dolphins and stopping to get close to a basking shark. I particularly relish the memory of seeing lightning split the sky to earth ahead of the boat. We dined on Inishtrahull, the most nothernly island in Ireland and took tea with the ghost of Mrs Doyle on Inis Oir (Craggy Island). The leg past the Aran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher were new ground for me and I will hold the images close forever. My mind's eye still sees those seas, hissing with rain, enveloped in a veil of mist and spray - a chill cocoon where the grey silk scarf of sky melted into the gunmetal slate waters. Long days, long memories...

Fit for Purpose

Skerryvore was fitted out for the Challenge, but is in truth a fairly standard Redbay Stormforce. She is a product of the highly successful 1050 mould and as such, a known quantity to donegaldan and myself who have taken her smaller and larger siblings to Scotland on a number of occasions. Equipped with a single Suzuki 300 hp Leanburn she was reaching almost 40kts in trials and cruised in the high 20s, returning very impressive fuel figures. This 300hp has "selective rotation", meaning that by changing a chip in the engine it can be converted into a counter-rotating unit - great news for some users, expect to see this introduced into smaller models over the next couple of seasons. Skerryvore also had four wingback ScotSeats to ease the day for her crew but also a pair of pod seats which provided storage and a place for "extras" to sit. The reality was that these pods in the aft position were actually very comfortable and I refused to part with mine on my second leg as it was the driest seat in the house. A 9.5m RIB with a hull like this gives a very smooth ride indeed. She was fitted with a sturdy towing frame and had an electronics mast over the console to take the antenna, lights and radome. The electronics suite was sponsored by Simrad and left nothing to be desired. I didn't have much dealings with it, other than to steer to the course on the dual plotters and listen to the sound system but I heard no complaints and everything functioned seamlessly throughout the trip, despite the bumps and the endless rain and spray. It was interesting to watch the rainclouds on the 4G RADAR - you could actually see how deep they were and decide to skirt them or run them. The 450 liter tank meant that we were arriving with around a quarter tank or more of fuel onboard every evening and the reserve was never called into play.
