Powerboat P1 British Grand Prix - And there was a RIB!!

Went out on Sunday to see the Powerboat P1 British Grand Prix of the Sea. There were some amazing boats, very quick. In the final race of the day the we saw this playing with the big boys. This RIB gave it a good attempt but broke and limped home.

fantastic pics as always andy, i need to get round to posting mine up. What lens were you using and how close were you? I'm upgrading my camera to a d200 shortly as the d70 is a bit old hat now and focus system lets me down more often than not...staying with nikon though I think I was using my sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX but I had to be pretty close to get the boats full frame...not always easy with the marshall boats doing their job (all the ones I spoke to were polite and informative ).

just realised from your pics andy, you must have been on the north west corner of the course? I was briefly on the south west corner, but I was with two fairly in experienced ribbers so didn't stay long as it was fairly choppy! Pic attached above is from saturday.

I was using a 100-400 Canon lense with a 1D MKIIn however I was driving the RIB for most of the time and taking pics was not really my priority!

The sea conditions was wind over tide causing a large chop, combined with the wakes of the raceboats. As usual some marshals where being over controlling, however there was a lot of boats near us and many in large white plastic pigs were idiots. All in all the conditions were challanging for boat handlers and then taking pics on top created more complications.

However it was a good day, and its was fantastic to see the large boats.

Ricky has some great big big air shots.

That green RIB looks like Kris Deraedt (Brugge Marine Center Belgium) his boat. I took a picture when we escorted the Volvo Ocean Race in Rotterdam.

Is that the IS lens? I had a 2x converter but didn't bother using it as it slows my focus too much and is quite frankly pants. I also didn't think I would be able to keep her steady enough without any image stabilisation. The 100-400 seems like a nice lens at a decent price, but the nikon equivalent (80-400 VR) is supposed to be slow to focus.

Looking forward to seeing ricky's pics.

Hi Tim

I'll get my photos up as soon as I fix photoshop (XP service pack breaks it!).

The D200 is a great improvement over my D100 - I upgraded in April and it was well worth it.

I use the Nikon VR 70-200 & the 1.7 teleconverter, which works pretty well (510mm equivalent), although the teleconverter does make a noticeable quality difference. AF speed is still pretty hot, as it makes it a 4.8 lens. Anything more than that and focus sensors will struggle whatever the camera. You are right about the 80-400 Nikon - it uses the old style autofocus unfortunately, and the 200-400 is seriously expensive, not to mention heavy!

Ricky,

Fantastic pics! Put mine firmly to shame, I was obviously in the wrong place as there weren't any exciting jumps like that!

Thorper, amazing pics, was lucky enough to meet some of the teams in Cowes when me and friends were snooping around their boats.... I was doing a course at Medina Valley Centre, lovely place, and we jumped on the saftey RIBs and went to Cowes to have a look.... hehehe....
