What a long debate that was! If you want the full story let me know, but in summary:

- 4-stroke is heavier, lots heavier when you get to this size of engine
- optimax is (alegiadly) equal or even better fuel economy to 4-stroke
- optimax is better performance
- i was swung to Mercury by some superb offers, but they don't have anything between 115 and (not even sure if it's a merc) 200 ish. I'd had to have settled for 115hp

Steering not arrived yet. Prop not arrived yet. Seats still with Mr stainless. Other seat with Mr upholstry...

...and more importantly Mr trained Mercury installer who has to turn the key for the first time for warrenty purposes is on Holiday 'till Sunday

Still, it's been nice to use his yard for 2 wks to get everything else sorted.

Oh, and untill Pete AKA skyeseafari collects grayswish on Monday it's not insured.

Not as many Pic's, forgot camera!

Well, a sucessful day, although very little to show for it:

Made tray for battery from 18mm marine ply
Wired in fuse box
Made battery leads and connected isolator
Threaded loads of cables all over the boat, discovered main battery ones and oil tank pipes are not long enough
Wired in smartgagues, discoveres Merc (Barrus) send a wrong lead, double
Fitted VHF, Switches
Removed old steering

and finally, overhauled grayswish trailer ready for her longest journey ever!

Forgot the camera, but rushed home to get it as it was getting dark. Michael doing... er something!

Now will the battery fit in there too?

My console front door looks about the same size as yours, and the battery is an absolute nightmare to get in and out of there - now I've greased the terminals it's even worse

Bet you must be itching to get the thing on the water now

Hi

Very nice boat. looks great.

What brand and model is that VHF, it looks nice, is it completly waterproof. (sorry if this is a stupid question)

Mine isn't so looking for at new one, the shop who sold it to me said it would be fine on a open RIB

In the Uk we call it a Icom M601, a small difference, but probably significant unless you have a switched on dealer.

I have one on my boat, and can confirm it is waterproof, and has coped with all that nature has thrown at it for the last 6 months.

The display is easy to read and the menus are simple to follow through.

Mr ginger is quite correct. Fully waterproof. It's very new to the UK market, previously Icom's DSC offering was a two-unit solution. Icom are, IMHO, the best in terms of quality and support for marine VHF's.

Downside is that it's over £600 rrp.

I got a deal at the boatshow, hard to say the exact price since i had the GPS, transducer etc. etc. bundled together. It was from Nautequipe, 01299 251005, very helpful. I've used them since and they were equally helpful. Their list price is £570incl.

As a final note i beleive it's icom's first waterproof offering with a disconnectable speaker mike. Note the 'speaker' part, essential on a RIB.

Sadly due to serious work overload (it pays the bills ) top banana has still not got her hull wet!

Progress since my last post is, however, vast.

Starting sometime last week i finally finished installing the electronics and their various transducers / aeriels.

With the new 130AH battery and isolator installed i fired all up for a quick test:

Said transducers.

Paddlewheel on left is connected to the engine for it's low-speed waterspeed reading (smartcraft can switch to a more conventional pilot / pressure reading over, say, 20knts) as well as water temperature.

Right hand transducer is a standard 200KHz garmin.

Another view of completed dash.

Note twin waterproof power sockets on right - invaluable for handheld GPS, electric inflator for ringo's, cool box etc.

Also please note that my 'bits of poncey yellow plastic' are infact 'colour coded yellow perspex bevels'. Not sure if they look as good as i imagined, but i'm happy with them.
