She looks fantastic Colin. If the weather does as instructed I'll look out for you around Brixham in a few weeks or so.

As far as I know yes they do. They are higher than the transom height, so if the boat is flooded, the engine still breathes air.

Not sure if they have anything else on the back of them

Your engine will be salty (and rusty) in no time. You could do with a bit of moisture trapping in there. Especially since they've faced them forward to catch all the spray. That Volvo won't have been cheap! It'll be a shame to start spoiling it straight away.

Worse still if the louvres are anywhere near the engine air intake.

Colin I share JW concerns, I can very occasionally get water through my intakes which are in the middle of the boat, double baffled and well sheltered by the helmsman, seats etc, so I think your ones are asking for trouble I am also surprised by the size of them, it might be that the picture is misleading but to me they look small As a rule of thumb an engine room needs 4.5 m³ of air per HP per hour, this isn’t all for combustion it is also for cooling. Not trying to worry you but it might be an idea to ask a few question now rather than wait for any problems to occur. Des

Ps Forgot to say nice looking boat

I think you will find even some large Phantoms are fitted out like this, but then they don't go to sea very often so probably not a problem. Apart from when someone zooms past in a high speed rib that is.

The engine air intake is right by the transom, on the stbd side. I will have a look what is inside the louvres when she arrives

more info

i just spoke to jason @ ribcraft. The louvres have splash plates inside.

As for the size of them, they are the same as is fitted on a 300hp inboard, so size shouldn't be an issue. The engine box is 1.4m long if that helps give an idea of size.

on a side note, a few people have recommended spraying the engine engine with spray grease...........what do you lot think to that?

cheers

colin

does the grease do any harm? surely some protection as a back up isn't a bad idea?

obviously stopping water going in is top priority, but a back up plan must help also?
