Highfield 460 Sport space.

Hi everyone, I'm the proud owner of a new Highfield 460 Sport. Took it out the other day, and it was great, however, between the helm and the bench seat behind, the space felt tight when standing up, I'm not tall or big, but was struggling for space as though the bench seat ought to be 6 inches further back. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Always nice to get a new boat.

Hopefully someone who knows this model will be along soon with ideas. I just looked at the makers video though and can see what you mean. It looks like the positioning is designed to sit down as standing either seems to press you to the wheel or have the seat in the back of your knees. I guess in keeping with its yacht tender layout giving maximum room forward.

Congrats on the new boat!

If it's one like this (https://www.highfieldboats.com/boat/...nge/sport-460/) I'm not sure what ideas one can give you. The rear bench appears to be part of the moulding and can't go any further back (or indeed forwards!), and the console is carefully designed around the sunbed area, flooring, etc. so moving it forward and retaining the cosmetic looks is going to be expensive (and ruin the factory sunbed arrangement)! The guy in this picture (https://images.boats.com/resize/1/89...00&w=900&h=900) seems to be very bent over while driving standing up, so the layout/ergonomics don't seem to be ideally suited to adult helming whilst standing given the height of the controls anyway.

I think it's probably a case of enjoy this one as it is (and drive whilst seated!), and if/when it comes to the next boat then look for a slightly different layout if you want to helm whilst standing.

Yep that's the boat. Seated is fine when the sea is soft, but when the solent chop gets going that's when you need to be standing so your knees can absorb the shocks. It sounds like you're telling me to let one of my kids take the helm, while I'm on the sunpad with a beer, is that it?

Looking at the still images of the Sport layout it seems in a nod towards style they have lost an otherwise useful area between the transom and back of the bench which might have been better allocated to helm space. I wonder if something like their Patrol model layout might suit your use better?

Well no sunpads back in my early days but when I was about 9yrs onwards old my late dad would always revert to lookout while I helmed.

Thank you for your input. I took it out yesterday and found wonderful 1.5m swells on the solent and behaved very well (the boat not me my little boy was at the bow seat but there is nothing really for him to grab onto, has anyone retro fitted grab handles to the bow of a rib for this reason?

I opted for the Sport 560 for this reason, as well as with the sun shade option there was no good standing head room if your 6 feet tall. The 560 with the T-Top and bolster seating was just the ticket.

As for grab handles up near the BOW seat. Highfield could do better in this regard for sure. My suggestion would be to get some cargo soft loops tie downs and loop them around the forward most grab handles ( easy on easy off ). Send a picture to Highfield after !!

Personally I would strongly recommend against having someone, especially a small child, in the bow seat (commonly referred to as a suicide seat!) whilst moving at any speed due to the dangers of 1.) being ejected overboard, 2.) smashed back into the console, or 3.) stuffed through a large wave and soaked!

But if you do need something there, the most obvious thing would be fabric handles glued to the tubes for someone to hold on to.

For the avoidance of doubt, if anyone from Social Services read my post, we won't do it again, I promise.
