Avon Supersports S3.45

Hi Guys,

This is my new project for the winter which I picked up for a steal and was in need of a lot of TLC and hadn't been started in 2 years. I was assured it ran fine up until it was winterised and had been stored in a garage for 7 years.

It pulled over fine so I took a gamble!

Here's how it looked in the ad and when I got her home:

I just about got her the 100m home from Hove to Bournemouth with one very dodgy wheel bearing and a tyre that went flat half an hour after getting home!

Luckily I got two new wheels/tyres in the deal and fitted with new bearings, Removed the seats and cleaned the deck down and looks x100 better with just a rust mark from the tank which doesn't want to shift.

You may notice in the original picture the seats had gone a pink colour but some diluted bleach and a scourer made huge difference.

Thanks for PeterM some fairy power spray, green scourer and elbow grease made a huge difference to the inner right hand tube (although I did both inner sides by the end of the day)

The hull was filthy too and this was just a quick jet wash.

The bonus was it had electric start but the key didn't turn in the ignition and appeared to be a copy of the original with no ID on it, so I ended up taking the control box apart and getting the Key number off the ignition barrel, £4.29 on ebay and 2 days later a nice new key from pacer marine which worked perfectly!!

I also ordered a set of plugs, cleaned the tank out with fresh fuel, cleaned the fuel filter and charged the battery and after 5 mins she was up and running!

Unfortunately theres no water flow from the tell-tale so its a new impellor and possibly a t/stat.

The steering is also seized and looks like no amount of WD40 and specialist tools (big hammer) is going to free it up so may need a new cable.

Matt i had a sticky steering cable on ours not long ago, but after much wiggling and shaking and baging and spraying it freed up fine, if you take the cable off try and get some diesel into the tube/sheath of the cable (it will free almost anything) and try some gentle heat after letting the derv do its work for a few days (WD40 is poor in comparison to regular pump derv when it comes to freeing rusty stuff..) while tapping the end and shaking the wheel....

Or buy a new cable....

I used Fairy Power Spray (£2.99 from Asda) and that thick green scourer, it takes a lot of elbow grease but they come up good in the end, I also tried Cillitt Bang power cleaner with bleach (in the bottle not the spray) and that worked great too.

Sure! post some pics of yours after its clean up.

I am hoping to get some more work this weekend (wife allowing!) I have a new impeller so hopefully with some water flow I can give it a good flush through.

Steering is well and truly seized in the tilt tube! With the nut off the end I've tried pouring boiling water over it and whacking it with the biggest hammer ive got and its just not moving, ive also tried a pair of grips and the tube twists with the steering rod.

Any ideas?

boiling water over the engine end?Get some derv down the tube if you can, boiling water will heat the steel and it will expand slightly.

Have a read, is the cable still in the boat?

I cannot really get anything down it, I was told boiling water may help soften the hardened grease (its been sat for 2 years) and make it easier to come out.

One option maybe to get the tilt tube off and soak it in a bucket but I assume with the tube removed the motor wont be supported?

try the other end....... where the worm comes out of the sheath........

I freed ours by working the wheel back and forth while having some one tap the end with a lump hammering sync with the wheel rocking.

Its probably not hard grease but there will be a few rust stops along the cable where the rust has swelled the inner bit and its stuck to the sheath/wedged.
