Workshop Manual.

Hi. I am looking for a workshop manual to help me to wire up a tilt/trim unit with trim gauge. plus a tacho. (rev counter) All on a 1985 50hp. Mercury out board. The engine was originally hand start but I got the electrics from a Mariner, some years back. I am now adding power tilt/trim, but my Seloc manual is about as much use as a One legged man at an arse kicking party. Has anyone got a Clymer manual to sell that might help me.... Many thanks.

I've got a clymer manual. It's not for sale though as I do use it.However, if you let me know what type of trim pump you have, and if it's the external trim pump and rams the solenoid type you have (Single or twin solenoid) I'll photograph the wiring diagramme for the correct pump for you.

It's quite an easy job with the right diagramme.

Be aware though, having had both the nonpower trim type and the external power trim type, there are differences between the two saddles and swivel brackets. The power trim mounts to the swivel bracket are a lot beefier than the damper bolts and they are a different distance from the top of the transom clamp to the bottom damper mount on the non power trim type.

Wiring the tacho is easy-it's just a takeoff from the yellow wire to the rectifier then power to tacho and a negative for the tacho.

Workshop Manual

Many thanks Nos4r2. I have Three cylinder tilt/trim ie. Two trim rams, and One tilt ram. The pump is Three wire type, Two solenoid. It all bolts in the transom bracket, I have altered the bracket to accommodate the power tilt/trim unit. I have also fastened up/down buttons to my Commander control box. I need diagrams to wire trim gauge, up down buttons and rev counter. The plug for the rev counter on the front of the control box has only Four wires to it, I think I need Five. Also the loom from the control box has Eight wires going to the Eight connector plug , but the engine loom has only Seven wires coming from the plug, Purple is missing from the engine loom. Any help you can give will be much appreciated.

Ah. Might be a bit difficult without the year of the trim/tilt unit. It's later than '85-I think they were sold as the 'classic 50, 45 hp' then. Have you got a trim gauge sender in there?

I may not have the diagramme for that setup.

Ok, searched for it and the only 3 ram diagramme I have is from the 75hp Mercury and it's so convoluted that your Seloc manual is probably more use. The manual I've got here is the Clymer Mercury 45-225hp 1972 to 1989 which SHOULD cover it, but doesn't.
The best bet would probably be to wire the trim system as a standalone system.

If you have a black, green and blue from your trim motor then black is earth, green is Down and Blue is Up. Wire the solenoids like a start solenoid supplying power to the leads-all nice and easy.

If you only have the 3 wires from the pump coming from the transom bracket there's no trim sender shown on any diagrammes so it probably doesn't have the facility. My later ('93) 50 merc didn't have the facility for one.

Hopefully these will help:-

Hello Nos4r2, Many thanks for the diagrams, they are very helpful especially the one showing the tacho and trim gauge. The trim sensor has a Brown and White wire as well as a Black. I know the Black is earth, but I dont know where the Brown and White wire goes. If you could point me in the right direction it would be very helpful. Cheers.

Take the brown/white straight from the trim sensor to the gauge and it'll work.
