I'm probably wrong and feel free to shoot me down in pieces, but aren't theses the engines out of the old Astra vans?

The wastegates stick resulting in overboosting the engine and a holed piston.

I had one of these go bang. Total rubbish. The dealer who did the repairs (which they partly paid for) said the problems were very widespread and said the engine was only ever designed to do 1000 hours. Unfortunately ours only got to 15 hours!!

two different issues.
Holey piston, No 3 piston, incorrect spray pattern from injector.
Wastegate, stuck closed, overboosting, stuck open, (me) no boost and long slow drive home.
On the whole though, so long as you knew what you were dealing with an knew the injector problem was fixed, (the most unfogivably serious issue), I thought these engines were ok.

My two penneth

Heard about the wastegate issue.
Any known preventive maintenance?

I happened to me once.
If I still had the boat and it happened again, I would either fit a boost gauge to indicate overboosting, or shut it entirely and look for an alternative to fit, like a poppet valve.

I also have this engine in my Parker and have experienced this problem first hand. Infact its thanks to this forum that I spotted the siezed waste gate, which resulted in having to replace the turbo. Every now and then I get my brother to put his hand round the back of the engine on the push rod attached to the waste gate whilst I throttle up just to check its moving free and easy. This is obviously not a good idea when the engine is hot or in a lumpy sea. The best way to make to stay on top of it is to fit a boost gauge - I just haven't gotten round to it yet . One of the machanics at Mercruiser recommended spraying fogging oil in to the aircleaner at the end of the season which should lubricate the wastegate. You can't really lubricate from the outside because of the fire blanket which covers it all.

Apart from this, its been a great engine (touch wood) and I've heard of these engines doing 4000 hours +. I think the early ones with the faulty spray pattern gave them a slighly bad rep. They just need a bit of TLC

Mates boat: Wastegate stuck open, new turbo was fitted and 3 weeks of swearing and no boating whilst I was enjoying myself.

Note to self: buzzing around your mates who have dodgy mercruiser diesel engines who are limping home is only funny for me.

no one mentioned the heat exchangers and intercoolers that rot away & the camshafts that can twist out of sync because they are not one piece items!!
