Southampton-New York

I have been searching the net to find the distance between Southampton-New York but i find different answers all over, it`s big difference between the answers, up to 400km if you take the southern or the northern way!!!!!!
Do anybody knows how long it is "closest way"

Looks like it, were ever i search i find the Northern way and the southern way, don`t ask me way, i totaly agree with you.
Maybee i searched New York-Souhtampton so there was an american that wrote the distance, ha ha.....

The earth is round ( go figure) so there is will be many numerous routes of the same length within the arc of giant circles going through the two cities

I`m with you about that, but can it be 2 shortest ways, but still, how far is it, thats the question, on internet when i searched the the southern way is 5,800km and the northern 5,400km, is the closest than 5,600km, Hmmmmm.
I have my thoughts of doing something crazy in an open boat, will se what happens.

Stretch a peice of string around a globe between Southampton and New York and you will see there is only one Great Circle route. (The shortest distance between 2 points on the globe) You will also note how far North it takes you- up into Alan Priddy territory. The shortest distance may not be the best route. On a Great Circle route you will be constantly changing your course to keep on track. For example once west of Ireland you will be heading Roughly North west, half way across you will be traveling due West, and arriving in New York- heading south west. Your Ideal route will probably be a combination of Rhum lines ( tracks following a constant heading, and the Great Circle route, constrained by how far north you wish to venture.

Going from east to west on this trip is not to be advised in a powerboat. It doesnt mater how far it is or which way you go you will be beating head seas all the time and it is unlikely that you would ever be able to carry the fuel for the 3000 mile journey. That is why everyone goes from west to east. You have got more chance of attempting this trip if you leave from Gib and head south before turning east. We have looked at it before and decided that it is not possible in anything less than 50 ft because of the fuel capacity require. I have heard of a 60ft RIB that was supposed to be under constuction but it all seemed to die a death. The guy who was leading the project certainly had the balls to do it.

Thank`s for all replies, i have been crossing the Atlantic a couple of times before but on a sailingboats and futher south, i have good knowledge in winds, waves and navigation after competing in sailing, know i am looking for something more crazy to do, i am still in thoughts, soo there is still no projekt, but hopefully it will be, but it will take a long time to plan.
I am glad for all recomendations and thoughts.
Do anybody knows if there is a record time in open boat and was it between these cities etc.
