I prefer to say they sound more like gun fire...

Like Martini said you won't from holding the hood...

Like Martini said you won't from holding the hood and pull cord but I wouldn't fancy holding the ht lead.

If the insulation on the cap has the slightest break in it you will get a belt, it'll be about 10,000 volts.

If you have hold of the ht lead and try and start...

If you have hold of the ht lead and try and start the engine you could still get a belt. Try rest the plug against the block and watch for a spark.

You can but you risk getting a belt if you do it...

You can but you risk getting a belt if you do it with the engine running.

If you do it whilst running use rubber coated tools, that way you won't get a belt.

You could do it with the engine running but you'll need to use some insulated eagle beaks or similar.
