I think we used to use stuff about 3 or 5 mm...

I think we used to use stuff about 3 or 5 mm thick - 1/8 and a 1/4 " - stuff comes in 8x4 sheets - most plastic suppliers should have it in stock.

Nothing will stick to it and it is very hard...

You can either use flat foam as used in excercise...

You can either use flat foam as used in excercise mats etc or a sheet of polypropylene - polyprop is indestructible and can be sawn to size with a jigsaw and curved to the right shape using a gas...
