I am rewiring a small rib and the icom vhf ic-m401 has stopped working and needs a replacment, whats the best option and is there any that other vhfs that would fit in the same hole.

Have you thought of using AIS. If you get it fitted then you can track it on the website www.shipais.com. Everyone else can see though as a down side and the signal can vary on the west...
