Electric tilt not working
 
Further to my getting my free searider, have now started engine runs nice but got a problem with the electric tilt. It just clicks like a soleniode clicking when pressing the tilt up or down button? (The boat had stood for at least a year) Any ideas? Hopefully an easy remedy!!

You need to cehck whether power is at the solenoid main terminals if so ensure it is getting to the pump, I suspect the former.

Yeah, chase through the entire electrics -

- power in to solenoid
- power out of solenoid (both up & down)

if both of them OK, then you are probably looking at either reoplacing the brushes or the brush springs in the motor, which is a simple enogh job, once you get the motor out. (which is a B- awkward job becuase the third screw holding the motror down will be buried in between the motor, the clamp & the transom...... That's the voice of experience, unfortunately)

Thanks , I will check that, any idea which solenoid it will be - there are 3 on top of the engine, going to be b****y awkward getting to motor as it is stuck half way up/down!!

There should be a manual realise on it. Not sure where they are on your motor but on my Yam it's a small flat head screw on the right hand side of the bracket.

In the absense of a wiring diagram, follow the wires - In the older engines they usually used starter solenoids for the PT, one for "up" one for "down" with a cat's cradle of wires between them. The third one , unsurprisingly is the starter solenoid. Newer PT units have 2 wires that essentially swap polarity to reverse the motor, and are fed through a single "two way centre off" relay.

You're looking for the two that don't have a chunky wire going to the starter motor.

Now the fun bit. If you have three solenoids, from memory threre will be three wires form the motor - blue, green & black. Black is the common, so attatch the black lead of your meter to it. Only one of the other two should see voltage at any one time. If it's not going up or down (And assuming the motor is OK) there's a high chance either the black wire will have fallen off or there is no power going to the solenoids in the first place. Also check the "small" wires to the switch. If the common has fallen off there (or corrosion in the bullet connectors in the remotes) that will kill it too.


I hope that description hasn't just confused matters - I just realised I used "solenoid" & "relay" to describe the same electrical lump. Wire colouurs are form memory based on my old Yam, so if I failed the memory test, Google "Yamaha outboard wiring colours" for the definitive list.


And yes. the release valve is down near the bottom of your clamp bracket, you'll need a long-ish handled big flat screwdriver.
